I prefer that they don't at all. And, anyone that contacts me directly or does blind-invites for this sort of thing gets blisted.

Being whispered/contacted directly about someone's FC is incredibly annoying to me, and 90% of the time I will find a random way of saying no, and just black list.
If I want to join an FC, I'd prefer they make a public announcement and let me choose on my own whether or not I want information on said FC.
Though sadly, when most FCs shout about their FC, it's usually full of lies like "We are open, friendly and have events!"
Half the time they have none of that and I don't get why they lie.
I had no idea recruiting/searching for FCs on PF was a thing.Guess that shows how often I use PF. xD; Usually only use it when I'm bored and wanting to run some random ex trial. If I ever decide I want to try joining an FC again, I might try PF out.
I won't be coming back to FFXIV's forums. The forum vibe is way too venomous and brings out the worst in me. I don't like who I am on the forums, so it's best to distance myself.
Ah the days of being new, and someone gave me like, 10k? Or maybe it was 20k? To someone who could only dream of having like 500g in other games- due to entirely different gold systems, I thought I was being given far too much than what I could ever hope to spend. Really tacked on the sense of obligation and guilt when I really didn't care for them. The best method I found is sending a /tell to someone, starting off with, "Hello, how are you?" rather than "looking for an fc?" I want to hear about a person's FC and not in shouts.
I join only on a try before you buy basis. People can dress up any FC in a flowery little speech in shout and you can join to find much of it is not as advertised. There should always be a no obligation policy in place when joining an FC.
So I say, I would rather talk one on one with someone, over all the choices and hope that they are exactly who they advertise themselves as. Most importantly, I would want a "drama free" fc that's been established for awhile.
I only recruit for my FC by having a thread here on the forums, and by posting to /r/ffxivrecruitment every 1-2 weeks or so. So far it's worked out pretty well. I'll never recruit via random /tells or invite spam as I hated that stuff when I was new to the game. (That and this stuff just isn't done on a JP server)
Several years ago, someone made a reddit thread asking about gay-friendly FCs in /r/gaymers. Two people advertised their FCs on Ultros - this was before I joined the game. So I joined Ultros and joined the first of the two that I could contact, and that was that.
I think this is a fine method: the FC makes itself known in an enduring form online, and people find it and apply.

I'd prefer it if they /tell me about their FC because then it makes it feel that they're taking their time with me. And then there's many times I just get randomly invited with nothing with it (no tells, no nothing) and those are incredibly annoying and shows laziness.

If I were interested in a FC, I'd prefer /shout or /tell as I'm a passive "beta" XD. I let blind invites time out, and it feels like even the last blind-inviter got the message as I haven't been bothered by it for 1-2 months. Never felt these guys truly care about the person or if the invitee's in-game interestes actually match. On the other hand, WoW-type procedures that resemble RL job applications are also a big NG. I can see the point for HC clearing applications, I guess, as everyone needs (pre-farm mode) pull on the same string. Othtwise no; so, no job interview, probation time or preparing and sending a CV. Tbf, the latter doesn't seem too common in XIV.
Just a proud bad-skilked player
Since I always look for specific criteria in guilds (small/medium sized, casual, chill..etc) I always take time to look, research and approach the FC myself. Have always been this way in other mmos I've played.
The first FC I joined was after 4 days advertising myself in PF. Received a few tells, chat with recruiters to know about their FC, and get back to them when I have made up my mind. The current FC I'm in is from the recruitment thread on this forum.
Recruited via /tell
I'm OK with this method. However, most of the time I will not join them immediately. To be honest, I much prefer if the recruiter is somewhere nearby when they do this. Unless I was afk of course. The first time I received recruitment tells during my sprout days I was questing in the middle of Central Shrouds by myself. Got me ????? super confused. At that time I didn't know how to reply tells either and it almost drove me insane not able getting back to them.
Recruited via /shout
When I'm seeking, yes, I do look through the shout as one of my options. Unfortunately, most of the time they are either huge or budding FC which can be a hit or miss for my own liking.
