I really enjoyed the middle part of the Stormblood story (after you leave for Doma, until the end of that story arc). The Ala Mhigo sections are just...kind of empty until near the end. If you can power through the first Ala Mhigo section you might find the Doma section better. But the expansion as a whole is definitely a stark contrast to Heavensward. That said, if you make it through Stormblood, Shadowbringers feels a lot more like Heavensward and the story gets a whole lot better.
Stormblood is like a weird off-tone sidequest that got stretched to an entire expansion. I didn't like it anywhere near as much as Heavensward and now Shadowbringers is out, it feels like a continuity from ARR - HW - ShB while Stormblood doesn't fit the sequence. It also feels very heavy on 'dark stories' of the conquered lands and cruel treatment by their conquerors.
The patch quests got more interesting, and started leading into Shadowbringers' storyline.
I was really hyped to fight a war against the empire, despite I like them better. But all I got are joke quests right after getting rekt horribly in Rhalgr's Reach
I was expecting a lot of dark mood after that, instead I have to endure Lyse acting like a teenager through Doma.
Stormblood was where i fell in love with the game, but it only happened once i hit the Azim steppes.
The bit with lord hien was they only thing I remember, everything else was super forgettable. Lyse was also a huge annoyance to me, I actually skipped cutscenes when she was in them..
Azim Steppes was the only good part of the SB story aside from the very last patches leading up to ShB. I really disliked the ala mihgo portion of the story. Not to mention I hated their zones. The same reason I dislike going to zones connected to Uldah.
Stormblood was good for me during the mid-part of the initial expansion and then during the very, very last few patches. The idiot bat got passed around a bit too often in that expansion for my tastes.
That said I do recommend going off once you reach 70 and unlocking the Four Lords raids. They had a pretty decent story and their fights were all very fun.
I actually like the Doman arc and Yotsuyu's arc in 4.2.
I'd agree with Yotsuyu except...
Asahi and how they made every other relevant character moronic to facilitate him ruined it for me personally. Yotsuyu's arc was great but the steps they took to resolve it really weren't, especially since it's plainly obvious Asahi has violated the treaty as soon as the Red Kyojin show up. Making characters too stupid to function in order to progress the plot is a bad habit of Stormblood's and it's especially present in that arc with Hien. I'd have loved if they reached the same powerful conclusion without beating their characters so hard that their brain cells end up numbering in the single digits. :<
