That's an interesting idea and I'm wondering if we can take advantage of the service to transfer a game platform to a different service account:

You'd need to have a licence for another version (Mac or PS4) as otherwise it'd be permanently disabled (not the outcome we want!), but if there is another licence:

NOTE: If you have registered several versions of the game to the service account in question, we will only remove the license for the requested platform rather than disabling the entire service account. However, by doing so, please note this service account will still be inaccessible for up to a week.

I'd be happy to lose access to the game for a week (and had to rebuy it all) if it meant I could get off of Steam... anyone got a Steam account they don't actually care about that they want to test with? LOL

On the other hand, I will continue to support both this game and Steam if I can continue to have the clients separate.

Fortunately, I've only bought one game through Steam (Portal II), and at least that's a game you can finish and forget. There's no way I'd buy anything else from them.
One severe option: Deactivate your FFXIV/Steam account, and leave Square Enix a note saying you'll reactivate when you can do it in non-steam mode. Play something else while you want for it to happen

I rarely, if ever, use Steam at all anymore. I do not keep it up to date. I haven't bought a game from them in months. Now I'll have to keep Steam installed and up to date despite the fact that I very rarely use it at all, and I'll have to just hope that this really won't have any impacts on my ability to log in and stay logged into the game. .

I'm sure the Steam client running in the background monitors everything you do, and passes it on to Steam so they can sell it to advertisers. If you just bypass it to play, then they lose that bit of profit.

I spoke with Squenix' support as well so they could lodge the frustration re: the steam client, and asked why it wasn't possible to change licenses or remove a license so I could rebuy the Windows one. They've said it's a restriction Steam has imposed, and I could ask Steam support about it.

In the meantime, I noticed that you can remove a key from your Steam account entirely (delete it); has anyone asked Squenix if we can prove that the key is no longer on our Steam accounts if they are then free to purge the Steam license from our service accounts? I doubt it would automatically fall away, that seems too simple, but maybe with intervention? :/

That doesnt make sense.... If its a restriction that Steam imposed, why are we able to remove the access key from steam entirely?

1- price of subscription. In some countries (like mine) is more cheaper to play this game through steam (almost half value each month).
2- some of us didn't knew about this attachement between this game and steam platform at the time these people bought this game.
3- some bought in moments of discounts and promotions on steam site or received a steam copy as a gift.
4- some just didn't knew nothing about issues on steam games (my case as well). And only know about it after this restriction SE is making upon the launcher.
5- some just chose to buy it for another reason. They are costumers neverthless and have protection laws working for them (no matter the reason why they bought this through steam or not they don't stop being costumers of the services).

Because I did use Steam when I bought the game four years ago, and didn't have any reason not to.

Still nothing on the issue of multiple people playing on the same PC and some having steam accounts and some having windows accounts.

Shortest explanation:

When most of people here bought FFXIV in Steam (5 years ago for some of us) they were OK with Steam and they were using it.
As time passed some people have become NOT OK with Steam and no longer willing to use it.
And if they want to continue playing FFXIV they will be forced to use it.
People don't like being forced into doing what they don't like.
As simple as that.
