Which isn't necessarily a bad thing in itself. I just hope players aren't d/ced the moment Steam has problems since they always do. If Steam authentication is required just to log in and not keep playing then it will mostly be a non issue.
Me too. However I fear that unless the Japanese community kick up a fuss about this then nothing will change and from what I understand Steam doesn't have a very big prescence in Japan. This probably doesn't affect many JP players at all.
I would do this in a heartbeat if square offered it, I regret purchasing this game on steam so much!
I just want the opportunity to buy Windows licenses. It's very clear that owning a Steam license and a Windows license are not the same thing (expansion keys bought from the SE shop are not compatible with Steam, Seam keys not compatible with an SE shop bought base) and now this extra authentication hoop. So please, SE, allow us to buy keys for the Windows platform if we already own the Steam version. We're offering to give you more money to ensure our product continues to function the way we are largely accustomed to. There are just too many reasons not to trust the Steam authentication servers, they're just bad DRM. I might own this game on PS4, but I prefer playing on my laptop. If I have to switch I will but many don't have that luxury.
I'm not happy about the decision to go forward with this idea at all so note that as /signed.
I started this game through a friend who gifted me the game on steam. Since it was crashing a lot and prompted full installs of the game ever so often (thanks steam for thinking the game isn't installed) I only started the game via the exe. As the announcement in march dropped I migrated to the standalone client thinking that'd be the end of it. Was perfectly content up until now.
By now I'm *way* too far into the game with seasonal events, achievements and so on to level a different service account again. This whole topic left a very bad taste in my mouth as, if they don't offer a way to migrate the data, the game will be dead for me. Which is a shame. But I'm not going back to launching the game via steam.
This is horrible. I was given my code by a friend who didn't want theirs. Does this mean as of September I won't be able to log in any more? If so this effectively bans my character until we can switch to direct Windows keys.
A thousand times /signed.
I hate this idea. Two authentication servers to log into just to play, Steam authentication server both authenticates credentials and also authenticates the game version, which means if the game version it has differs from the game version YOU have (say steam servers are not updated for some reason) then you will not get logged on. Too many checkpoints to cause errors. Non Steam users, two point check...Steam users, FOUR point check. Not acceptable. Oh and neither SE or Steam will take responsibility for issues raised, Steam will say "oh contact SE" SE will say "oh contact Steam" so not only a 4 point possible failure check to log in but no where to go with issues if they fail, ping pong game, that's it. Very angry about this!

This is going too far pretty sure. We will be able to logon but with more login checks to pass i guess.
/signed. I bought the steam edition back in 2015 not knowing about the restrictions with it. Always launched my game through steam from an icon on my desktop and never had an issue but the main thing I'm worried about is when this gets implemented I'll have way more d/c's than I do now. I'm hoping this change isn't going to change much in the way of me launching the game. I don't want to have to resort to getting the ps4 version.
