Today's PCs could handle it a lot better than the systems that were available then.
Before I upgraded my graphics card, I could only get 1.0 to look like this:

it's 2019, i don't see why not. i can understand because the ps4 and likely ps5 wouldn't be able to hand it either. i shudder to think of actually playing xiv on console
Legacy mark here. Thank goodness 1.0 is gone forever.
What I miss about 1.0 is the slower pace gameplay, the need to plan ahead before you travel to another city. How world monster were actually a threat even at Lv.50. How gear dammage actually discouraging you from dying.
What I don't miss is the laggy menu. The high level monsters that blocked my path to Mor Dhona. The market place that was a nightmare to find what you need, you litterally wading through hundreds of retainers, and lastly the one thing that made me quit the game....Ifrit AOE lag.
Tried to get back into it after hearing about the Legacy campaign but I had really bad internet back then so I missed out....
Common sense is not so common anymore.
Legacy here, and I miss aspects of 1.0. I know that I look back fondly on it, kinda in the same way I look back fondly on FFXI... But I know that if I had to play it again I wouldn't enjoy it as much as I thought I would. (And I say that as someone that has tried to go back to present-day ffxi a few times...)
Act in such a way that you treat humanity, whether in your own person or in the person of another, always at the same time as an end and never simply as a means
Because they want this game to have low-end specs to allow for a wider swatch of players, and that level of texture fidelity is /way/ too intensive for no pay off. They literally went over this at the last Japanese Fanfest when the asset team got to have a panel and they explained why the original version of the Crystarium that was teased before 1.0 dropped was illogical. (And for exactly the reason I listed. They literally made highly detailed light bulbs /WITH/ animated filaments in them that no one could see - to give you an idea of how extra they were about all the small details.) At some point graphical fidelity for the sake of graphical fidelity is a case of diminishing returns in MMOs.
Edit: Found the fanfest screenshot thread on reddit. Scroll down a ways and it's summarized.

People complain about not being able to play XIV on their PCs NOW. We don't need 1.0 back... it failed for a number of reasons. Hell the combat in THIS game is seen by many to be too slow.
I guess you only want people with high end PCs to play FF14, or are you implying PS5 is worse than a PC able to play FF14 well from 2010?
That landscape doesn't look remotely as interesting as what's there now, though...
I'm grateful 1.0 existed, but I like the changes made since.
The videos I've seen of 1.0 is the casters cast Fire or something once every 5-10 seconds, melee seem to be autoattacking, and everyone not melee were stacked on top of each other and hardly moved. Oh and occasionally they sent a ranged up some stairs to kill a meteor once in a while, but that was for the final boss.
That's not strategic. That's boring. That's and I quote the president of SE: Boring enough to damage the entire final fantasy franchise.
