Yep. That's basically why I'm staying.
I'm really fascinated how this game is progressing and I think it's teaching me a lot about game development and interaction between consumer and provider.

Personally, I'll be watching the cutscenes on youtube and starting over on a new english-speaking server with a fresh (non-destroyed) economy and hopefully a million less gobbues running around (I quite like the bonus mount idea, but it's an added bonus that I wouldn't have to see them everywhere). I'd rather not pay to endure a game with horrible lag and frankly, dreadful UI systems.
I'm happy to let others enjoy that and post information on the web, and I'll keep my money.
See you in 2.0!
(Edit: It should be noted that these 'experiences' will get added like once every 3 months so you're pretty much 'experiencing' the umbral era 1/3 of the time, and even then I hardly call getting teleported into a room to kill some mundane human enemies an experience)

technically speaking, this is game is still in alpha stage since the core mechanics are being worked on. Beta will be the 2.0 version release.I see some people complaining about the fees. I hope they realize this next year is a one time deal. We are going to see a brand new game unfold right underneath our own feet. All the event are real time(almost), we are essentially playing a prequel of FFXIV in a beta form. We are really going to give the bards something to sing about.(probably should quote that)So, this is the first time I've seen an mmo do this. . Soo, how I look at it, we are playing a betaish game, that BIG events are going to happen, that we are the only ones EVER going to see it/experience it/feel it. Talk about immersion I say.
I dont want to miss out on the 7Th umbral era event, so I am sticking around. And I am on the 6month payment plan ^^
Even though as a product FFXIV launched in a crappy nature. The ride from seeing it change and evolve over time is pretty cool. It does feel pretty nifty to have all these things happen, and feel as if you were an actual part of that universe.
I still don't get the whole "real time" thing. Is the eorza going to start literally changing its appearance daily? O.o
