As much as a mess Stormblood's story was, it was at least building onto the ongoing story against the Empire. Ishgard, Doma and Ala Mhigo were all nations developed for the on-going conflict of the Empire but it seemed The First exist completely outside this story.
The conflict against the empire is just one part of the story, and not the main part.

The main story is our conflict with the Ascians and against their efforts to create Calamities. The First is most definitely involved in that story.
