Yeah I have like 431mil and I don't even feel rich when I see screenshots of people with close to 999mil. I've not made an effort to make gil since 1.19, it just seems pointless when HQs are so worthless. Selling double materia melded items seems to be the cool thing now but I find people prefer to make their own rather than buy, thus unless you get lucky and double meld within 3 attempts on that 18% chance you probably aren't going to make a profit. Longterm you're going to average just under 1 in 5 so it's not worth it. Farming and gathering is probably where the money is these days and I can't be bothered with that right now.

why aren't these people buying more materia and getting +5 materiaed gears?

Because people with the most gil tend to be the cheapest players, plus there's a lack of materia. I struggled to find enough DEX materia to shoot for two tier IV melds nevermind three or more.

The system is just retarded, it's like 6% chance on a third meld and you'd have to be insane to attempt any more than three. I would need about 20 double melded gloves just to have a good chance at slotting a third. We're talking about 100 tier IV DEX materia in total.
