It doesn't really matter to me. I end up not being able to stay with a job very long to consider it a "main". So at some point, I end up being the cannon job at one point or another for a time.

It's not a top priority, but it is in the back of my mind, and I recently replayed through HW as a DRG, mainly to face off against Nidhogg as the two Azure Dragoons and have the story acknowledge that.
I wanted to play through SB as SAM, but I just couldn't get on with the job.
I started FFXIV as a gladiator main back in 2011 in pre-Dalamud era. When jobs were introduced, I was more than happy to be a Paladin again, as it was my main in FFXI.
I have played all of the main story so far as Paladin. Evad D'aragon just wouldn't feel like Evad D'aragon if he wasn't a Paladin.
No I do not switch to whatever role seems to be main for Storyline.. I have however gotten my ninjam job armor and weapons permaglamed to the rogue clothes cause I love the look.
It's nothing I usually pay atention to, I only play the "canon" Job by coincidence.
I was a Monk during ARR, with WHM as my healer main. (Did most of the MSQ as Monk)
For HW I added DRK to my portfolio to cover tanking and switched my DPS main to NIN and my healer main to SCH. (Did most of the MSQ as NIN)
With SB I've settled into SAM as a DPS main, WHM coming back as my healer main (SCH at 60+ just doesn't work for me) and DRK staying my tank main. (MSQ completion pretty much being an even split between SAM and DRK if we count the entire 4.X MSQ)
I have a lot of other DPS leveled for a lack of things to do but barring any drastic changes with the battle system rework I'll take my SB setup into ShB. (As I plan to level with a mate who is keen to play as a Gunbreaker I'll likely do the majority of the 5.0 MSQ as SAM, then split the later patches across whatever I feel like)
For me, as a White Mage main, I have a strong tendency to go through the story on my main, but at the same time, it's very odd to be a white mage as a "Warrior" of Light. I go through some side quest stories as either my ninja or summoner and it gets more exciting cause I can threaten people with daggers especially (sad that I can't actually play ninja well despite liking it so much).
But white mage in the end always feels best. So I try to keep my glamours on point. I try not to do much of the modern aesthetic and keep everything to a fashion an adventurer might really wear. But I can't consider myself a roleplayer, I just try to get in the mindset of the protagonist of the game.
RDM starting from 70. I'll probably tag off between that, WAR and DRG on next patches.
same for me. kind of like in kingdom hearts III sora wears the same outfit unless he changes in combat based on the keyblade. You are you, the wol and when you fight you fight in whatever is suitable to your playstyle.
I've always played as PLD till now and probably always will, not only do I enjoy it, but it fits my character better than any other job in the game right now. Though, I get the feeling I'm going to feel very out of place in Shadowbringers.
PLD Player: "By the power of Darkness I will defeat you, Holy Spirit!" *fires of light themed holy magic spell*
PLD Player: "The Darkness will shield us, Passage of Arms!" *Wings of holy light appear to shield the party*
Bad guy: "you keep using that "Darkness" word, I don't think you know what it means..."
