Did it really went free to play? I thought they decided that they won't charge for it until they done fixing some stuffs, and at the end, didn't they charge for the monthly fee or something before they close it down?
That's because right now this game doesn't check against Steam's auth servers before allowing you to log in nor does it require those auth servers to be online to continue playing. The upcoming change will change that, see ESO online in particular to see what that change could mean for FFXIV and that is why folks are asking for the chance to buy and apply PC keys.
Give it a few weeks and we'll see if that changes when they actually implement the changes. I am also on steam and currently have zero issues, I even load the game through steam everytime, always have. But if they force us to authenticate the game through steam there is a pretty big chance it will cause a large amount of connectivity issues. We don't know, we'll have to wait and see. If ESO is any indication though its going to be disaster.
Frankly the lack of information of exactly what they're forcing on us is a big problem. This thread might not even be a necessity. I wish we would get more official information from SE about what they're being forced to do to our clients.
Maybe I missed it after the first update on March 13th, but it looks like they’ve updated the notice again without updating the date this time. It used to start with “In order to align even more closely with Steam policies, we plan to implement an even more rigorous login check process for Steam service ...” but now it says “As part of our fraud prevention measures, we plan to implement a restricted login check process for Steam service account users.”...
Regardless of the reason they are doing it, the result even it it's only half as bad as the change was for ESO it will be a disaster, and there is always a chance for it to be worse than ESO. ESO doesn't differentiate between "US" keys and "PAL" keys. If my "PAL" key for FFXIV forces me to a Steam auth server in the EU my connection will easily hit the thousands.Maybe I missed it after the first update on March 13th, but it looks like they’ve updated the notice again without updating the date this time. Bumpity bump bump. As a steam user this is a big concern to me. If it’s as bad as I fear it could severely hinder my gameplay time and enjoyability. I would happily rebuy the game if I can apply it to my service account.
It would really suck to contemplate creating a whole new service account and starting from scratch just to avoid this.
Even with the reason changed, it still not going to...ease our worries or prevent any problems.
Although I'm curious what kind of fraud(s) related to 'being forced to using Steam platform only'.![]()
I don't play FFXIV on steam. But +1 in support. This is a serious issue that needs to be addressed.
Was worried this would get lost in the sea of outrage over the gender locking issue. Glad to see it returning as a topic. I have yet to see anything from Square further on this topic either? Supposedly we were to hear by the end of this month which is in 3 days or so. Hopefully, this means they've seen the feedback and are rethinking it.
