The three things that made me pick up this game in the first place were that 1) You can play any job on one character, 2) Gear sets looked about the same on both genders, and 3) No gender-locked races.

I'm otherwise looking forward to Shadowbringers (AF disparity aside), but the decision to add 2 gender-locked races is upsetting and I hope they add both male Viera and female Hrothgar in the future.

Male miqo'te were the same, you said they were rare but you made them playable anyway and everyone was so happy.

Veteran healers don't care if we need to heal, but right now we don't. We want interesting things to do during the downtime other than a 30s dot and a single filler spell that hasn't changed from lvl 4 to lvl 90.
Dead DPS do no DPS. Raised DPS do 25/50% lower DPS. Do the mechanics and don't stand in bad stuff.
Other games expect basic competence, FFXIV is pleasantly surprised by it. Other games have toxic elitism. FFXIV has toxic casualism.[/LIST]

Good on you, OP. This gender lock is a disgrace when one of the very pillars this game was built on being gender equality and here we are with two limited races of the most basic pairing you'll find in every free-to-play Korean MMO. Final Fantasy is better than this, this development team is better than this. Give us both male Viera and female Hrothgar and stop setting terrible precedents for this game.

I don't think the reason has ever been "because lore says so", but because making new races takes a lot of development and they wanted to try different things. The lore simply suits the fact that they won't add the male counterpart.

(As I said in another thread, I don't like this path SE has taken, albeit I don't consider it the end of the world either, and I still keep the hope that male Viera will be eventually added).

again, creating a whole new second genderlocked race is much more work than simply adding a second gener to an already existing one in developpement. so resources are not the reason this was made.

It is more work, and they acknowledged it. Asa I understood, they decided to take the "more work" route because they thought it'd be good to try something different, and give players very different things this time.

I wish they hadn't taken this route, but I understand that once they decided to go with it, resources would be limited when it comes to making two complete difficult races.

Thank you for making such a well thought out and reasoned post, OP.
I agree, this is a disappointing decision. I hope the devs will reconsider and offer us both female Hrothgar and male Vierra in the future. More choices are always good.

What they said was, I believe, that it would have been more work to do male and female of one race and easier to do one gender for two races.
