Those look more like gold saucer novelty items than event rewards.

They could have put some heart-y textures on the items? I don't know. It looks underwhelming to me. Personally, I won't bother getting the items.
Huh? I have no idea what people's issue is with the rewards. It's a Valentines event, obviously it's going to have love-related rewards? Everything looks right to me.

I believe part of the problem is that we got two mounts last year, which was a pretty amazing reward (along with some furniture that I personally liked more than what we're getting this year).
But as always... if they give out an amazing reward ONCE they set expectations high and now suddenly every follow up of this event needs a similar good reward or the devs are being lazy (while actually most likely putting in an aweful amount of overtime right now to get 5.0 ready).
I'll never understand why people are so fixated on getting a mount or something equally "huge" as a reward from a tiny event - its a nice surprise when we get one, sure. But this imidiate attitude of "Oh, no mount, devs are lazy, event sucks" specially right before the next expansion always seemed short sighted to me.
Nobody said this though. No one asked for a mount. The rewards are crap. Nothing to do with valentines day whatsoever. Like I said, if they wanted to make a DoH reward, they could have made it a heart shaped pan. The effects could have been an after thought for all I care. As usual, SE is just lazy. I bet these were supposed to be gold saucer rewards as someone said. Because they've gotten good stuff a while ago and now they're spoiled about this, especially after the last Moonfire Faire with the beach outfit and the extra jumping puzzle.I'll never understand why people are so fixated on getting a mount or something equally "huge" as a reward from a tiny event - its a nice surprise when we get one, sure. Went all huffy when All Saints' Wake was less with rewards than usual and the Starlight Celebration clothes were robes, because "Ugh, robes again."

The reward is a sword, for Dark Knight, that's pretty much it. CUL off-hand isn't even visible most of the time.
It's not about being spoiled, or it not being a mount, it's about these being by far the worst rewards for any seasonal event ever.
I've not liked plenty of the previous rewards, thought they were kind of naff, low effort, underwhelming, whatever, but at least they weren't literally just one weapon for one out of the fifteen jobs.
