So..now you know, hopefully you didn't add the person as a friend, cause even if you change name, you'll be on his friend list, even if you remove him from yours (which is really a dumb system), you will be on theirs. So if you want 100% anonymous, server switch would be the only way.
People still can see if you switched servers and the new name, because the dumb system you mentioned before keeps working for crossworld friend lists. But yeah it's common sense to not go around giving your personal information to everyone. I've told some few friends my real name, but that's it. We all agree to keep using our in game names while playing.

I believe the only way to clear out a name is if you move to a new data center. When Balmung opened up recently, we had some new transfers from a different data center, and they said that it cleared out their friends list. I haven't tried myself, so can't confirm if true - but maybe someone else can shed some light.

If it is true, it may be an option if you're completely desperate.

Oh, that's right. When moving to another data center, all names turn into Unable to Retrieve. But yeah, works only if you switch dc. If you stay in, say, Aether, you still can see everyone's names. Such an outdated system. If I remove someone from my friend list, I wanna be removed from that person's list as well :/

Just as an FYI, even doing all of that a person could still track you via your lodestone. All they need to do is save your specific link and they'll know any name/server to change to. From there they could make an alt on said server to harass or whatever. Just thought I'd share. It's a common issue in other MMO's as well. But yeah, the current FL design is pretty bad.
