Wouldn't explain the timer, though, just not getting the e-mails. Not getting your e-mail doesn't mean the timer is off.
A couple weeks ago when I returned from my haitus I almost lost my personal house. I *never* got an email for warning of auto demolition but I'm REALLY glad I logged in when I did. Sucks that people are losing their houses for seemingly no reason. :/
SE please fix this! Housing is a limited resource as it is and there's NO reason for people to lose their house if they log in every day and check in at their house!!!
Did you even read the thread past the OP? There is no proof that this "bug" exists. You hear endless accounts of people who claim it happened to "someone they know" or "a friend of a friend" but there's only been a single person who bothered to file a bug report about it and no one has been able to substantiate the rumor in any way, shape, or form.A couple weeks ago when I returned from my haitus I almost lost my personal house. Please do not propagate the story as gospel truth. It only perpetuates the cycle and keeps the rumor-mill circulating. Should you feel the need to "warn" people about it, please make it clear that it is a supposed bug and has not been proven. If someone you meet claims it happened to them, tell that person to file a bug report on the proper boards. Posting anywhere else about it does no good.
The email bug is a long-standing issue that SE really needs to devote more resources toward. But, again, post on the bug report forums if you want to get it resolved.

Were yours in a subdivision?
I have 2 emails with this formatting, there is someone else with one, on top of the original. Seems kinda odd that people would go to such lengths, especially those of us who think there is no bug.
Yes it would explain not getting the emails but I think it could cover some of the complaints about the timer. While anecdotal I've seen enough people lose houses that I believe many have no idea what the timer value is on their house. If their house demos due to misdirected email I would not be surprised to hear them say the timer was broken. I'm not saying there aren't some folks who have seen a flaky timer but the fact is none of us know the value until the 15 day mark when it pops up under the estate housing tab. That's assuming people even know to look there.
I can't recall if mine was in a subdivision or not. None of my other houses were, and they don't say "Subdivision" on them. But I have no idea if the one that I posted (which I just bought on a whim, knowing I'd lose it because I was unsubbing) was in a sub or not.
