My father grew up on a farm in Minnesota so he would be from Ishgard/Coerthas. My mom and I were both born in San Diego, CA so inbetween Ul'dah and Limsa I think.

Of course in the story, my home is Ishgard.

Anyway, yes Garlemald is more Russia, a country that masters the world's technology. Putin's Russia has invaded Ukraine, Georgia, and Chechnya in the last 20 years. So yeah.

Limsa Lominsa is probably the Caribbean if you focus on pirates.
Gridania is closer to Canada (more likely Atlantic Canada or Quebec) due to the forests.
Ishgard is like a cold Vatican City due to the religious overtones.
Ul'dah is more like Turkey
Kugane is essentially Japan, but more like Hong Kong for how it's arranged as neutral ground.
