If they really decide to do it, I hope they will only merge the less populated servers.
If an entire server, even if it was just one with a small population, was to be merged with the one I'm playing on, it would be horrible.
Waaaay too many people.

But I don't mind server merges as long as it does not affect Lindblum..we already have three chocobos, thanks.
Servers like Kashuan would be off better, though.

They are starting to charge in a month, before jobs are added, without the benefit of 2.0 rerelease and PS3 launch.

Population will go down.

I don't want to have to pay/wait for a year before I get a server with decent population.

Servers that have moderate to high population should not be subject to server merge.

Servers with low population should be considered for server merging.

Players that cannot find other players to play with may get discouraged.

So far, the folks I have seen express an interest on the merge are from the servers:
Melmond, Cornelia, Trabia, Gyashl, and Fabul.

I have not revisited the character creation screen / server to see how many each chocobo has. Ul'dah wards, aethryte, and repair NPC should be used to gauge the population some. Limsa and Gridania should not be used as a reference.

The topic may be further assessed by SE during and after the first month of subscription.

i dont see the problem with server mergers, just take half of the servers that are lowest and add them to the highest. The all ready low pop servers are gonna be hit hardest with p2p. i kinda feel bad for them cause its enough to make people quit a game.

If we have alot of mostly kids and other immature players quit due to world of starwars or billing starting at least my server would be a much more enjoyable place to play.

Theres already a bit of overcrowding atm so for overall this be a good thing.

Only thing that would suck about this is all your retainers and what not. Isn't that a lot of work, data, or whatever to move these from server to server?

I'm also all for a merger. We all know populations will take a major hit across the board. I agree with other posters, it should only be limited to the lowest population servers with an option on which server they can move to.

Unfortunately, I seriously doubt SE will spent the time and resources on this with all they have on their plate already.
