I think it depends on what updates you want. As I mentioned, a lot of the updates that have been requested would be fundamentally game-changing. I fully expect the game to get plenty of updates that aren't for its entire lifespan.

As far as budget, I think Square Enix has a conundrum there. With enough money, they might be able to update the server structure to allow for a lot of the changes they can't currently support, things like a glamour log, crafting material inventory, and so on. But if they're going to spend to do that, why stop there? Wouldn't it perhaps make more sense to make a new game building on the lessons they've learned here?

Yes and no. The issue would lie on how feasible (from an economic perspective) they find sustaining another MMO, specially when they technically have 3 active (FF11, FF14 and DQ10)

11 and 14 are still good money sources for them so if they add another FF MMO, it'll definitely hurt the numbers of either of the two. However, they can improve on it without considering a new game nor a "new calamity" and because the latter (i.e: 14) is the most recent game; improving it makes much more sense than releasing a new one entirely.

    If you say so.

If they shake up core mechanics too much in FFXIV SE run the risk of losing long time customers. Contrary to what many think, the majority of players are satisfied with the current state of the game. If they weren't there would be threads whose popularity would easily rival the controversial greed only in alliance raids threads. The current formula may feel stale to some, but it is something that works. Changing it too much is risky.

If SE want to do something vastly different to the core they would be better off making another game. Players are more open minded when presented with a new product because they have less concrete expectations.

I'd really love to see SE make a far bolder attempt at creating a different take on the core mechanics in another progression mode. What they have done so far has worked, but feels a tad lackluster from being a bit too safe.

Honestly, I don't think subs fell after ToAU, WotG might've seen that effect, but definitely not ToAU. The only real change to the game came with Abyssea, the rest just added to what was there, and even with Abyssea, through the Trials, old content was still desirable to do.

I'm seeing a bit of "upgrade the graphics" stuff and honestly, I'm okay with FFXIV's current graphics. Then again, I still think the older games like FF8 & 9 are beautiful, pft. I really am not a fan of the almost hyper-realism that FFXV took on so I hope it never gets THAT advanced... SE also needs to consider those without high end PCs. Don't want to cut out a fraction of their revenue, after all. But if it means getting our booties back, I'm all for it cuz it looks really weird to have no butt sometimes. (I couldn't find a male comparison in terms of link, sorry)

I think they can take what they have and improve on many points. No need to create an entire new MMO.
They need to not play it so safe now and do something more bold and something new and creative rather then using same formula, in game assets, etc.. And change the horrid loots system and this game could be great again like it felt when i first began this game over 4 years ago

Which other MMOs do you think have done a pretty good job in retaining their player fanbase?
What does WOW do in order to sustain their fanbase? Maybe FFXIV might wish to think in that direction to improve.

For now, I think patch 4.3 is going in a good direction, with its storyline, interesting primal fight and the return of the NEED button in raids.

About XIV, I think XIV can get more 'refined' touches, as the hair physics (no more clipping).

I don't want too much more details, a flower pot killed my old PC and that was enough.

Honestly I just want to see FATES have actual use to max level characters and gear with actual effects and set bonuses on it. And not just extra crit or another substat, but actual effects to the class and how its played. Like Samurai's Shiten refunding Kenki on crit, or DRK's Bloodspiller having a reduced cost.

Yes it'll cause a poopstorm but what doesn't at this point. Honestly I would rather see no invites for SAM if missing a gear set than just because I decided to level the class.

i don't really like FFXIV lore. i don't like the concept of playing a character with the Echo, Hydaelyn, how Primals exist, or even Beast Tribes as implemented in FFXIV.

i still NEED to have a Garlemald expansion and i want to see the end of the Ascian/Zodiark storyline but after that i'm ready for a new world with some entirely new concepts.

i have serious doubts of going 2 expansions past Garlemald.
