Was wow for me hands down. Lotro as well. I think this game does things better than both of those such as crafting.

Wow's engine is hard to duplicate in terms of response. If ff ever had that type of fluid response to its engine and gameplay, it would move up quite a bit but they would also have to do something about the ease of the game as it's too easy in it's current form.

I tried ffxi years ago and still have the discs and such. I couldn't get past a couple days before I left it. It's what made me try wow.

No game will be overall better, but other games do certain things better, some others worse. GW2 handles glamours way way way better than XIV, WoW handles raids better than XIV, Wildstar housing blows ours out of the water, ESO has better large scale PvP, I'd say that TERA or Dragon Nest have better combat.

It's ugly and a chore to play by modern standards. Obviously graphics and control schemes are the first things to age poorly over the years. In terms of content, storytelling, itemization, class creativity, etc., however, it blows FFXIV out of the water. If FFXI were re-wrapped in FFXIV's modern graphics and UI, it would be vastly, vastly superior to what we are currently playing.

Note, by the way, that 'better' is not equivalent to 'more accessible'. In fact, these two are often inversely related; just as the largest blockbuster movies are rarely among the best films produced in a given year, or the best literature is often dense and difficult to read, the best MMOs are typically those that focus on depth and immersion over instant gratification and gentle introductions. FFXI is indeed (or was for many years) less friendly to new players than FFXIV, but it was nevertheless a superior experience for people who could handle the learning curve.

The base subscription price is $11.95 a month. You then buy Content ID for each character you want to play which is $1 each and you can have 16 characters on One account. So simple subscription with one character is $12.95 a month.

I really can't think of one that is better... like some have said some games do one particular aspect better than others. I think in terms of combat Aion did things better than everyone else (if only that game was handled by more competent devs and the game wasn't so ping dependent).

FFXIV overall is the best there is right now, and is still alive. I don't think there will be anything better for a long time given the budget and development time that needs to go into an MMO.

I’m actually logged into it right now as I type this out.

It’s graphics haven’t aged well at all, it’s why I said XIV graphically is much better. Does it suffer from how much SE straight up pilfered every dime they could from it for the last 10 years? It does. The UI is very clunky. They have made the new player experience better, but it’s depth can be daunting to new people.

For graphics, UI and new player experience, XI can’t hold a candle to XIV.

That’s where it stops for me. I don’t feel attached to Eorzea like I have In Vana’diel. Much of that is the simplified and refined theme park nature of XIV. What happens or changes in Eorzea if everyone sits on their butt for a month and we all do absolutely nothing?

Nothing changes except maybe hunt monsters live more than 10 minutes.

Vana’diel is very opposite of that.

NPCs will go missing, regionally exclusive items will no longer be a available, towns in war torn places will be overrun with monsters and even more.

Outside of MSQ cutscenes, Eorzea has no need or use for the WoL, it is just fine without us. The primals and their followers never leave their little places and do anything ever. Beastmen did attack the towns in XI if the adventurers didn’t keep them at bay.

I enjoy feeling like my actions matter. Like I have a real reason to do something. That is missing from XIV, and that is pretty significant to me.

    I’ll leave with this:

XIV is like making brownies from a mix. They’re quick, easy to make and they’re brownies.

XI is like making brownies from scratch. They can be time consuming and frustrating while learning how to make them.

Either way is ok, regardless of how you get them, brownies are yummy.

If all you want is a quick and easy sugar fix without depth or lasting satisfaction, then the mix is good enough and you would be very happy with that.
If you want more depth in your brownies, different types and mixes of chocolates or nuts or the amount and type of sugar and flours, then you will only be satisfied with making them from scratch.

Reading too much of the forums makes me very sad and apathetic.

It is a better RPG than FFXIV any day of the week, on so many levels. Looks like you never got past Valkurm /prayers.

PS: Way to belittle what you don't like, huh?

How do Black Desert, Blade & Soul, and Skyforge compare to FFXIV? From what I know, the BD is very demanding and literally requires you to stay online to keep up with competition. SF is like FFXIV in that you can play multiple jobs on one character. B&D has a lot of T&A and good combat pvp

As I said in another thread, GW2 is a very good game and does so many things right without buy to play + subscription + cash shop, e.g. voice acting or general art style, the different species ("races") which are not just humans with cat tails, humans with horns, humans with long necks but actual species, and they also have a rich and great lore without political correctness (e.g. the Asura with ther condenscending master race attitude, or the Charr that still would kill off the humans, etc.)

But then, my Lalafell Blackmage, I don't know, I just like this Japanese approach of the things. While in FF14, your first quest is something like: "Behind the house is a sad guy, /dance for him to cheer him up", it's really straight: "The Inquest stole our project: Kill them, destroy their lab and get our hostages out". I was like Wowowow! Calm down! While I just nod in FF14, I really liked the entire player-centric stuff in GW2. No forced dungeons with 8 people there, but in the cutscene, it's you alone that defeated the army of Garleans and such nonsense^^

However, I always felt more calm and settled in FF14.

*The trinity forces people to play together, I - an asocial player - found so many friendships in FF14 while in GW2 it was always somewhat cold.
    * The performance of FF14 is outstanding while looking good (I could throw my Ryzen 7 1700X and my GTX1080 at GW2 and still get unstable 25-40fps).
    * The design of the clothes is pretty neat, even though cute and "Japanese"-style (But personally, I just love the combination of Lalafell + Blackmage + Stardust + Evenstar Set)
    * While I enjoyed an Engineer and a Sniper in GW2, I think the professions in FF14 suit me a bit better. I could never really distinguish Dragonhunters, Guardians etc. They are all just tanks.
    * The general art style of the FF Franchise can be so good. I just think of FF Tactics, XI and such. Not the ones with doll-humans like in FF13 and spoled teenage edgelords in FF15. But when I see concecpt arts of the "cute and fantasy" FF titles, I always would prefer that to anything an US company can pump out.
    * Gear Treadmill - I try to approach it more calm now so I can get higher numbers and advance without putting this game as my 2nd job and becoming a chore. But else, permanent development is nice in NUMBERS, while in GW2, you have the masteries that give you more features (e.g. gliding, then controlled gliding, etc.)

So deciding between GW2 and FF14 is difficult, but during all the 3 years, I always felt the urge to just play a bit on my Lalafell, that's why I could readily ditch GW2 after they ruined another profession with failed reworks.

subjectively, I find LotRO the best MMORPG I've ever played, but that's because when it comes to fantasy, I'm biased towards the Tolkien compendium.
that said, I'm more biased towards science fiction, and I consider the original Mass Effect trilogy the best video game franchise I've ever played (and still playing the buggy ME3 multiplayer).
however, I bear sentiment towards FFVIII, and I play MMOs for the sole reason of playing with friends, that's why I'm still here.

what I think LotRO did better than FFXIV despite its outdated graphics etc.:
costume(glamour) system--almost every armor piece can be dyed
pet class mechanics--Lore-master, best magic class if you have the skills to match (I didn't so I progressed better as Rune-keeper lol)
the interaction with the environment--almost every NPC has a dialogue/doing something relevant to its setting; there are separate creatures that are part of nature, and there's that eerie feeling of danger in certain areas, regardless of how high level you are

I could list more but it would make me sound contemptuous of FFXIV xD
