History (all past games except one, this is the only MMORPG I actively play but there is another MMO I also play):
Tibia (my very first, considered it amazing at the time. Still going AFAIK)
RuneScape (10 year cape holder. I've played both the old versions as in pre-2006, as well as the new stuff like Evolution of Combat. Is probably illegal in places now due to the RMT gambling element now present)
World of Warcraft (I did some raiding in this)
Runes of Magic (cheapo WoW knockoff)
Guild Wars 2 (got to like level 20, didn't like it)
Order and Chaos 2 (mobile MMORPG, had it on Windows Phone. Couldn't enjoy it)

    Current:
    Final Fantasy XIV
Elite Dangerous (technically an MMO, even though the netcode is total garbage)

    What I like about XIV:
Story (I feel I can really get into the story)
Raiding (though a bit stale with the formula, the fights themselves are fun to tackle)
Housing (outside of it not being instanced, I mean even RuneScape of all games had instanced housing and this was added during its heyday, the housing aspect is really good. Compared to RuneScape again, the houses are infinitely more customisable here)

I think that covers it all

As I'm sure you are well aware, it takes more than one person to be able to kick a player from a duty, so in all those instances there were at least two people agreeing they'd be better off without you tanking.

Guild Wars since 2004 and still playing, I love the 2 new updates they brought it earlier this month! (Guild Wars 2 although I loved the beta for some reason and got the CE I only played for a week until I removed it from my hard drive)
World of Warcraft since 2006 and still playing
RIFT since beta in 2010 until they changed sub to F2P at which point I immediately cancelled my sub and removed the game from my drive.
FF XIV since 2014 with multiple breaks and now thinking to stop permanently.

And for the future I have pre-ordered Bless (Steam EU version), if it turns out to be ok I keep playing it, if it changed into P2W I'll immediately remove the game from my drive.

    What is your MMO history?
    Started in around 2009...
    • Free Realms (played until it shut down for about 4 years)
    • Ether Saga Odyssey (2 years)
    • Aura Kingdom
    • TERA
    • Eden Eternal
    • Grand Fantasia
    • Revelation Online
    • Blade and Soul
    • Perfect World International

And is there something in particular that you like about FFXIV that is not present in other MMOs you have played?
The non-toxicness I've felt in game. Compared to other games this community is rather tame. It feels a lot more inviting than other games I've played.

I also have Guild Wars 2 but I haven't played it enough to actually stick it in the list. I currently play FFXIV obviously, but I'll still occasionally hop on WoW and SWTOR in between patch cycles when I need to take a break.

I like FFXIV because it doesn't require a huge time sink and endgame stuff is easily accessible. It's also an overall very relaxing MMO to play. Decorating your room or house after grinding is super therapeutic.

I've not played too many and never really been able to get fully involved apart from Runescape and FFXI, since then I've just had to dip in and out of various ones (Rift, WoW). Never had a decent enough PC to fully appreciate the PC MMOs:

Phantasy Star Online PS2 - really had no idea what I was doing but really enjoyed it as a young un.
Runescape (since Old School) - not played in years though.
FFXI 360 - Most time sunk into this and still only had a few maxed jobs.
Neverwinter Xbox One - played this for a bit when I first got my Xbone.
Star Wars The Old Republic - got this on release thinking my laptop was good enough, it wasn't. Went back and forth a few times due to loving Star Wars in general but really couldn't handle catching up!
GW2 - at uni played on my laptop with a housemate, was good fun but stopped as soon as my second year was done!

I've only recently got back into FF14 after swapping my Xbone for a PS4 just to play! UI thought, well I don't have much time to game, why not play something I enjoy (and is endless) when I do have the time!

    Vindictus
    Mabinogi (Ugh....)
    DC Universe Online
City of Steam: Arkadia (This game was great until the devs ran out of funding, and had to shut it down :c)
Perfect World International (For like... a week?)
    Lord of the Rings Online
    Elder Scrolls Online
    Final Fantasy XIV

Probably the fact that starting racial stats are insignificant in this game. I like being a big guy who's also a healer main. The "Big dudes can only do melee DPS" and "Healers/casters can only be small frail types" thing in other MMOs is so lame.

I like FFXIV because it reminds me of FFXI and it is better in a lot of ways. It's polished - content updates regularly - and just a great MMO.

Runescape - My first online gaming experience, I've played for over 10 years, still play it but not much, more so when I'm waiting for a new patch to be released for FF, its graphics are crap but its more sentimental reasons I log in and friends.
WoW - pretty much quite once I started playing FF.
Aion - loved it but it went downhill quite fast after they moved to free to play and haven't bothered with it since.
FFXIV it was the graphics that completely sucked me in, also my boyfriend plays it as well and introduced me to it so it's something we both play together.

Well, the first "MMO" I played was not really an MMO, but it was a big MUD called GemStone 3. This was around the time Ultima Online was big.
-Next was Asheron's Call (shoutout to the one other person in the thread so far that played that).
-Then I tried Dark Age of Camelot but didn't really care for it.
-After that was WoW, off and on from 2007 to 2014.
-I played Tera for a little while, and I liked it, but not enough to quit WoW. Still love my tabby cat with a spear though.
-I tried ESO when it came out, and it was alright, but the multiplayer aspects made playing with friends nearly impossible so I didn't stick with it.
-And then FF14 which I still play of course.

As for what I prefer about 14, the short list would be the glamour, the ability to play everything on one character, the gratuitous fan service to lifelong FF fans like myself but still maintaining its own unique story, and wrapping it all up in a way that makes even the fan service make lore sense, and 90% less poop quests than WoW had. There are really hundreds of reasons, but that is a quick summary of some big ones. ^_^

To many really, as I've tried out all sorts of MMORPGs over my time, even regret buying some of them (cause they ended up being horrible), but I'll list the ones that made an impact on me and/or I sometimes return to.

Also these are in no exact order, but EverQuest was my first MMORPG and I started Final Fantasy XI during CoP (and I have every disc leading all the way to Wings of The Goddess).

    EverQuest
    Final Fantasy XI
    Horizons/Istaria
    City Of Heroes/Villains
    Eve Online
    RF Online
    Star Wars Old Republic
    Guild Wars 2
    Elder Scrolls Online
    Final Fantasy XIV
