I appreciate that you would rate people properly. But not everyone will, and you can’t really expect everyone in DF to behave as you do.

The amount of trolling/bad behavior that already goes on is already bad enough (example: a post on Reddit made recently that involved someone calling a tank garbage—though, they used far more colorful language—in PotD, when the tank said it was their first time). Implementing a rating system—be it 1 star to 5 stars, or bronze > silver > gold > platinum—would just be a recipe for disaster because, I think, more times than not, people will use it to troll or retaliate against someone they dislike, or who isn’t playing to their “standards”.

To use a more “positive” scenario, what if people gave ratings like they do commendations? “I like that person’s glamour, so I will give them 5 stars” or “That person said something funny in chat; I will give them 5 stars”. Very lovely things for people to do, but that doesn’t reflect on the mentor’s gameplay, or mentor capabilities.

Since commendations are so subjective, so would a rating system like you have described. Many people don’t even comm “the best” player in a duty, but for other reasons.

    Moving on,

A proper mentor system is one that's backed by GMs, introduced to the playerbase, limited in numbers per world and given a change so that other players can try their hand at it.

And for the love of all that's good and holy, remove the crown and put a watering can. Imagery peoples, IMAGERY.
This. It would be a big undertaking for SE maybe, but a worthwhile investment in the end, I think. There's no algorithm that can make sure that the mentors we have are good mentors. The icon is a lie. This needs to be overseen by real people.

I just can't imagine them moving on this. I bet the system works just fine in Japan.

What the community expects of mentors is only that, community expectations. There are no rules or guidelines set by SE. For now, all the crown really means is a person who has completed x amount of content.

FWIW, I agree that basically everyone who wears that crown is hands down going to be the worst in your group. Whether it be seriously low dps, attitude or lack of raid awareness. Unfortunately, aside from attitude, its not really a thing there's systems in place to monitor.

I absolutely get what you're saying and you're right, no doubt. On the other side if people would rate ruthless and without any sense in mind, people might would step back from being "the king"-statussymbol (like somebody wrote in this thread before, didn't remember the name: "mentors usually are the worst players of the group" at which I mostly agree with) and leave the ones "behind" that actually want to help. Players have been "rewarded" long enough with a crown symbol without even needing to bring anything of importance to the table.
I personally coulnd't care less about an icon infront of my name and even more I don't think there is even the need of the mentor-system, in the current state it wouldn't even make a difference it it wouldn't exist anymore or neither did. Either you're nice to a newbie and explain mechanics and stuff or not, simple as that.

IMO people who actually want to mentor newbies should get a new/replaced icon which simply isn't that much of a show-off thing and give that crown as a... I don't know... 1500 days subscription thing or whatever.

About the rating system that just got nonverbally banished with this post -> just the first thing that came to my mind reading the title, no actual thought were put into it ^^'

Sorry for strange usage of words at some points, english isn't my first language

90% of players on my blacklist are actually mentors.

Back when I was new in 2014 I barley got help from mentors in novice chat or the world, the mentors where the first to shout L2P and go google you useless brat and stuff like that.
I got more help from sprouts and they where the ones actually explaining stuff to me if they had done it before.

Now as a veteran player where I don't need help anymore I still see mentors left and right being utterly toxic and just love to give the sprouts a bad day.

Half of those so called 'mentors' can't even properly play the game or perform their job well, ask them anything about Ultimate or Savage and suddenly they no longer shout 'L2P' or go google (even though that information is available everywhere on the net) so they don't do their own research either.

I don't need a stupid crown, I can help people without it. I've helped so many sprouts already and I once made an amazing friend out of a sprout I once helped and after we continued to play together.
I've seen many sprouts that are just afraid to ask help because the toxic mentors.

They can remove this for all I care, oh wait don't remove it, this way I at least know who I can directly put on my BL and what people I should avoid.

I once had this 'friend' and was in discussion (yet again), and once again she was right because her BF was a so called 'mentor of mentors' yeah well they weren't and whatever I ask about ultimate or save or even ex was just a fail, was my best laugh of the day that time.

Edit: maybe it's different on U.S and of course I know its different in Japan.
In EU it's just horrible, but then again 90% of the player base in EU is just outright horrible people, only 5% would be people that can actually play properly.

    This, all the way.

This isn't about crowns or status, or ugly mounts. If this isn't the core of your motivation in becoming a mentor, then you're really not doing it for the right reasons.

Upping the requirements wont change anything especially for long time players like myself. I'd still meet the requirements suggested.

They need a rating system for the mentor system. one in which you can up a rating, but not down vote. Instead of down voting, which is easily abused, add mentors to the report system for bad reports. This would hopefully force someone to look at a report or two before downgrading a mentor. You get so many legitimate bad reports, you lose the mentor status or something. It would require more work on Squares end so I dont see it happening, but even just an implementation for upvoting (similar to comms but seperate) would be something. Esp if it changes the color of the crown or something.

Sadly, a voting system is meaningless without the downvote element. So you have two people with 10 upvotes. Time to start calculating how many runs those upvotes were acquired over and try to understand if they did bad during the rest of the time. Also factor in that if they run mostly on dps, on content that doesn't need explaining, good luck getting an upvote. So a wonderful dps mentor could still be at 0 upvotes vs. the horrible tank mentor who pulled through on the one trial and got the rest of the party upvoting them.
An alternative would be that you need to maintain a certain average of upvotes, but this would still be problematic for players who run dps vs. tanks and healers, and ultimately useless for people who wear their crowns only outside of duties but never inside and inside they're the worst scum mankind has to offer - because people shouldn't be able to vote for you either way unless you're wearing the crown - you're just another player if you don't.

I've long wanted to be a mentor and have been working on it. I have TONNES of alts though and love keeping the sprout up (I love the icon! >_>) and others are "returning players" and get into the newbie network. And like people have said, a lot of the time I can be a more helpful person as someone that has not obtained actual mentor status than the people that have. I LIKE helping people out and do so whenever I have the time and opportunity.

But its even easier to become a crafting Mentor. And I dont think they are going to raise the requirements because SE wants there to be many mentors out there to fill the mentor roulette queue, preferebly tank and healer mentors.

Honestly I wish their was 2 separate queues for mentor roulette, one for low end content lvl 50 and below, and one for high end content with the high end content having better rewards than we have now.
