and um, dude no offense but if you played with someone who had insane gear, it was really different.
Fully agree! There was no comparing someone with AH gear vs. someone will full sets of the good stuff.

That's not my point, though. My point is that people could do any endgame event with basically just AH gear. Having better gear in FFXI definitely made endgame battles easier, but it wasn't essential. Knowing how to play your job correctly -- and having a few other jobs leveled to use in different situations -- was more meaningful in XI than having amazing gear.

That's not the case in XIV, because the jobs are all somewhat homogenized and all battles are basically DPS races.

The thing with gear in FFXI is, best in slot would last years instead of a few weeks.

That's largely because the game was locked at 75 for many years. Once Abby was released and the level cap got boosted, things changed pretty quickly.

Well one thing why i never got to far in FF11 and leave it realy fast is because of this xp loosing and delvl feature. This is a no go for me (and maybe many others) in any game. I dont have a problems with outdated graphics or an old UI, so did they do something about this xp loosing thing in the past years or is it still like at release?

They still have exp loss upon death but it's so easy to get it back it doesn't even matter. Plus players back in the day would generally get a buffer to compensate for a few deaths if that occurred. And unless you were trying to solo things, actual death was relatively rare with the exception of endgame farming if something went wrong or doing sac pulls in dynamis which mainly hurt the poor thf or rdm who was doing all the pulls.

As much as I like the phrasing of that, I want XIV to expand on their own lore. From what little info we got of Eureka, they're giving us a new zone to explore, on foot no less, with a death penalty. And it's in a region in Eorzea that's been mentioned by name only, now we get to play around in it. This will give newcomers a taste of what XI was like in a sense.

I mean if they WERE going to meld VanaDiel into XIV as some alternate universe, it would end up being a raid of some sort.

The deleveling could defintiely hurt back in the day. lol. I was one of those players who was not clever enough to keep a decent EXP buffer back in the day, so I'm quite familiar.

Now, as SilverObi above mentioned - you do still lose a bit of XP, but it's negligible at this point. I've been playing XI with a XIV buddy who just started the game, and I've been waiting to hear that infamous sound of the delevel! It hasn't come yet I'm hoping we'll get at least ONE delevel, so he can experience it, but I'm not holding my breath.

I heard they are coming out with a vanilla server for FFXI. When that comes out you can bet that I am going to be going back. I played for 8 years and the only thing that is keeping me from playing it now is abyssia. It was a fun expansion when it first came out but the speed at which it allowed you to level and the way they made it very solo friendly changed the structure too much for me.

    Tarutaru SMN for LIFE!!!

Also, I miss having to work together with other crafters. Everyone being able to be an Omni-crafter and easily mind you, really ruins the whole system. Plus since gear is far more linear it makes for a restricted system compared to what FF11 had.

The main difference between FFXIV and FFXI is that FFXI is built as an open world game that has mass group events. It was less about moments of high and intense game play like instanced Duty Finder Fights and more about strategically chaining together group attacks, knowing how to trade off with other groups, and playing victory by attrition. What this meant is that not only do people get to play and experience the game world, people of all stripes are able to get access to all the items and content. The original games fault was more so that it ate up a lot of time, since people would camp world spawns for items and there was no real easy way to get currency outside of crafts and gathering.

Ah FFXI. A game that I hold dear to my heart as it was my first MMO. A game that I feel was the last true FF game. Every FF after XII (An offline version of XI but love to death), SE has lost sight on what FF is all about. I know it's not the most favorable opinion but I truly wish 1.xx had succeed over what we had have now. Sure it had it many flaws but if the Dev Team had put more effort into the game, I think it would've been even better than XI. The problem with FF nowadays, nothing is really memorable or is a mess on what it wants to be. I like XIV and all but I feel that it's just WoW with a FF skin over it. Too many ideas that the Dev Team has put into this game has made me either go, "Why would you do that?"
