I don't know what to make of this.

    Hello.
I've just finished a Kefka kill, in which there was a wipe before the actual kill. One of the party's members /tell'd me after the fight with a kind of conversation I honestly hoped was a troll.
For context, it was not my first Kefka normal kill, and I figured out most of the mechanics. After the wipe, I humbly offered to explain what I had learned up until then. A couple of people, this person included, instantly shut me down and told me to stfu and "don't spoil the fight". I got quite dumbfounded by the reaction, as most newbies I think would prefer to be given information beforehand, so they can do their best with more knowledge.
If anything, there are way more people complaining at people that they get in their groups that aren't patient enough to explain anything and just flame newcomers at the first mistake...
I ended up not explaining anything at all, respecting their wishes.
When it was over, before I went, I commented (and here is where the copypasting starts): "(Solarianna Farron) I've been playing MMORPGs since 2004, and you guys are the first people I ever saw refuse someone who is willing to explain mechs."

I didn't mean that as an insult, nor do I think it sounds as one. I simply wanted to express my shock at such a reaction to someone who just wanted to help.

So I left the place, and shortly after, this person /tell's me. I'll copypaste the whole conversation, but I will not disclose the person's name, as I'm against naming and shaming, even though a part of me just kinda wants to throw it out there out of pure personal salt. I'll add paragraphs and name who said what, to make it more readable.

    --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Him/Her to me: gratz that u play mmos since 2004 what did u win ?

Me to him/her: I'm just mentioning. I've offered to explain mechanics, which is more than most will do
    >> most people will just flame peple for wiping
    >> people *
    >> I offer to explain the fight

Him/Her to me: and some people wanna go into the fight blind and learn themselves

Me to him/her: you're the first I've seen in YEARS with that mentality
    >> you're basically saying you know you could do better, but don't want to

    Him/Her: i know im a special snowflake
    >> sweetie that fight is just normal ....
    >> why do u spoil a fight on me

Me: explaining mechanics is not even spoiling the fight

Him/Her: when i pay the game to play however i want ?
    >> it is
    >> for somepeople

Me: oh, you're one of those
    >> alright

    Him/Her: honey lol
    >> do u have act ?

Me: I know where this conversation is going

    Him/Her: honey
    >> i do savage fight blind
    >> sweetie
    >> you aint gonna judge me with the heal u did with literally 0 dps
    >> honey
    >> dont even start it

Me: and I don't wanna waste my time with people that use those terms loosely, you're special indeed

    Him/Her: ohhhh honeeeyy
    >> i know im a special one
    >> <3
    >> thanks for the compliment

Me: you're either drunk, high, or even worse, you actually believe in that attitude of yours

    Him/Her: believe what ?
    >> that i dont want an irrelevant to explain the fight to me ?

Me: best of luck in your future endeavors, people like you don't listen

    Him/Her: gurl BYE
    >> Genji Grimoire (this was an item link).

    [ Player's name ] is now blacklisted.

    ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I honestly don't know what to say. The conversation is here for you to read and take your own conclusions, and if I am in the wrong please tell me because after this I honestly don't know what to think.

Have we as people become so self-absorbed that refusing someone's willingness to help or advise is considered having some sort of superiority? Have we reached an in-game point that our in-game accomplishments (or lack of) deem us worthy/not-worthy of giving out information?
Have we become so spoiled and overprotected that someone daring to offer help to such self-professed deities is met with reactions like these?

    ...

I don't know. Maybe I'm getting old or something. Maybe I'm still living in the age in which I started gaming.

To conclude, I just want to point out two more things:
    - First, in case someone wonders, his statement that my DPS was 0 was because I was healing, but it was also a lie. I'm the exact opposite of what people here call pure healers. Yes, my damage contribution was WAY lower than I usually achieve. Still doing these fights the first few times, so I'm still trying to find the muscle memory within the fight and the mechanics therein to be able to maximize the timings to DPS properly. It's, as always with new content, a progressive improvement, in which the more used I get to the fight, the more I'm able to DPS. But to go from there, to say I've done "literally 0 dps" is a BIG stretch.
    - Secondly, am I the only one who thinks his/her speech is extremely aggravating? I don't even mean getting my gender wrong, because I chose to give my character a female name, so I can't expect others to guess... but the whole tone of how he/she spoke?! I find it hard to imagine that kind of speech successfully getting by in any social environment. The attitude made me salty, but the way that attitude was imposed upon me made it exponentially worse.

Thanks for reading, if you survived through the wall of text. I swear I tried to make it as readable as humanly possible.

    Hi!

For future reference, we share our sad and incredible crazy stories here!

You pretty much found the infamous "You don't pay my sub" player. They way they reacted to your advice was clearly wrong. Although, most of us also find that kind of player, the entitled child that think they can do whatever they want. The only thing we can do is to ignore them and move on. If they harass you or insult you, well, there's an alternative route: report them.

EDIT: Also! as a veteran MMO myself too, in this game is when I gave up when it comes to give advice/explanations. People get triggered or they just ignore you. At most I can demand certain things like "Yo, use AoE moves please". But you can guess what happens there too. That's the community we have. It's not the majority but you'll find them eventually.

tbh most people don't want fights explained the day after patch day. Its new. Part of the fun on playing on/close to patch day is figuring things out.

The theory behind it is that some people learn fights better by doing blind runs and having to figure stuff out for themselves rather than go to guides or ask for advice. I've grouped with a few people like this, but never one as arrogant about it as the person you experienced.

I'd definitely report them for that post-fight conversation as harassment though.

I didn't read the whole OP as it was very long.
Can confirm some of us enjoy going in blind and figuring things out on the fly.

Another way to think about it:
If you enjoy crossword puzzles, wouldn't it he substantial less fun to have someone who has already completed the puzzle standing over your shoulder telling you what the answers are?

We are less than a week into the patch... Why not allow them to solve the mechanic puzzle themselves if they want to? Do you believe people should clear everything on day 1 to get that type of fresh experience?

Just do what I do. Don't ask for opinions just blurt the mechs right out since I have zero trust in pugs picking up simple mechanics after a wipe, and I was promptly proven right since people still die to the riddle mech repeatedly even after I explain it at the beginning.

I've seen plenty of instances where people don't want fights explained. I don't like it when it happens on release either, but I don't actively fight it. I don't feel this person handled it well (and I feel you were a bit hostile too), but I understand the sentiment of wanting to go into it blind.

And sure, you can set up a PF for a blind run, but those aren't usually the kinds of things PFs are built for (not for normal content at least). And you could easily get someone in there who wants to spoil it just for the lulz, so really, I get why it can be frustrating to someone who wants that fresh experience and doesn't have a easy way of getting it.

This is why I end up depriving myself of sleep to do the stuff I really wanna do blind at the crack of dawn on patch days. It's the only real way to be sure.

Savage Raider here. Actually, as much as I hate getting into groups where no one knows what to do..... that's usually saved for a few weeks after patch and for Extreme / Savage pugs. I agree with the person you were arguing with :/

This is story mode. It's for people who enjoy the story and who prefer to raid at a more casual level. Kefka is a massive nostalgia trip for a lot of FF fans.

You gotta give people a bit of time to enjoy and figure out thing themselves, progression is the fun part of raids, even in story mode. My first run of Shinryu was 100% spoiled since some tank held up the entire group for 20 minutes rattling off every single mechanic. I just wanted to see it myself. Same with running dungeons for the first time. Just like you figured it out, let other people enjoy doing the same.

Of course, if there is a singular mechanic that people are clearly not getting, then is the time to just say what that one thing is.

Don't spoil things in the first week for people, OP. Most "newbies" or players in general want to enjoy things themselves while its new. And don't get upset when people don't do what you've told them. Your 2004 MMO badge of honour doesn't mean you know better.

Sending you /tells like that was kinda wrong on their part but to be honest, your comments before leaving and after did strike me as a bit rude.

In my experience, from my own perspective and from watching other people, going into new content blind is sometimes preferred. Speaking for myself, I don't want my hand held through new stuff by someone who has already seen it (especially when it's only been out for less than 3 days). If I ask for help with mechanics, then that's a different story, but especially with brand new content, I'd much more prefer to see something "fresh" with no pre-existing expectations of the instance. I think a lot of people are like that. You may not feel that explaining mechanics is spoiling it for someone but that is your personal position on it and it's not taking into account another's position. It has nothing to do with that person "..knowing (they) could do better but not want to.." and everything to do with finding out on their own.

I went into o5 normal last night through a PUG and everyone was new to it. It was fun figuring it out as a brand new experience even to a very new player like myself where pretty much everything else but this is "old content" to most everyone else here. I got to experience that fresh newness for the first time and I think I would have been a bit disheartened if someone explained all the mechanics to it. You take away a bit of the magic of something being new, in my opinion.
