This can be fixed by the below. On Topic: It is certainly possible, my LS almost did it but you have to be really lucky after hellfire and the mages have to have a ton of HP+ materia on their gear and food. If he decides to Vulcan Burst immediately after hellfire there's a good chance a couple of people will drop.
Before my static members all got Sentinel what we did was drop two nails down. After two nails are down, DPS all stack on the mage on the left side. That mage will rebuff, stoneskin, cure hp to full. Once hellfire approaches everyone that can will use rampart/defender. Right as Hellfire is started, mages just cast curaga on themselves, what will happen is hellfire will hit and immediatly afterwards curaga will land.

with 1 nail down I expect 2500-3000 dmg, so if you have full hp usually it just bring hp to red.
with 2 nail down I expect 1500-2000 dmg, it's pretty much like with 1 nail + sentinal.
and in my pt we can bring down nail in 10 secs.. 2nd nail probably 20 sec so there still lots of time.
No one said you cannot do it without Sentinel. Just the standard for us all to kill it in under 6 mins for a more speedy and efficient weapon farm.
Did you read that list? Gladiator Ability 1 would be Sentinel and it is not exclusive. It may not stay 66% but it is sticking around.
Because there is not a name for the ability, and because the dev. team is striving to create class uniqueness, I am guessing that a strong tanking ability like sentinel will either be class exclusive, or won't work as well on classes/jobs other than gla/pld.
it will be interesting to see how different ifrit fight is going to be. thanks everybody for the input.
I survive Hellfire without Sentinel every time. With the upcoming class reform, it seems that sentinel will be a class/job exclusive ability/trait that won't be readily available to other class/job.
I wonder how is it possible to ever win the Ifrit fight without this wonderful ability. Has anyone who beat Ifrit with nobody in the party or just the tank having the sentinel ability?
From all the personal experiences, guides and video clips available, I have yet to seen anybody beating Ifrit without Sentinel. Have you? If you have, would you share how?
It's not tough to survive Hellfire w/o sentinel as long as you get practice in. For my group it's what happens afterward that does us in. Mages are really the most at-risk but it's fixed with some Materia, timing Stoneskin, and getting lucky.
Also thanks for the info Technolust. We've tried that but our melee would gather too early I guess and it would end up with some eruption on the mages that was targeting the DDs. I'll make sure to give it a shot next time.
Btw nice sig Answa, love that movie =P
thats only if things go as planned... eruption, vulcan, and incinerate really fcks things up if u wanna be pristine and ready for hellfire with everyone NOT having sentinel. Especially since ifrit isnt an instance where u can assign mages spells at a specific given time. Skill locks on rampart/defender kinda take your time away to move to mages.
Our static group still does that even with every member having sentinel. We survived, we beat Ifrit.
Those that say you have to have sentinel to beat Ifrit, have no idea how to think outside of the box.
Id slap the melee if they were anywhere close to me before hellfire. Last thing i want is a eruption near me while im doin last minute stuff.
(and yes i know about the cures DURING hellfire, i use it on the tank everytime. Whoevers done ifrit a billion times its common sense to them. But we are talking about every other pt member this time in the best position and at least half the mages kicking off a successful curega along with it, all the while dodging the aoe's and cracks and etc)

I remember the Alpha days when even breathing lagged you
I did my first ~30 or so kills without Sentinel without much of a problem. Just before Hellfire, I'd pop defender, rampart I, then pre-cast cureII as the Hellfire animation goes off, followed by 2nd wind, bloodbath +WS after his first TP move, and back to yellow/white hp.
When I finally got Sentinel I was like... "how the f can anybody with sentinel ever die here..."
I don't think I've ever been in a group where NOBODY had it, but in principle it should not make any difference if 1 person can survive it, 8 can

You're welcome, here are some other things that might help you out around the hellfire stage. Always make sure DPS and Mages that are stacked for hellfire, be completely aware that an eruption can spawn on them, but since it's while nails are up it's only one eruption and is easy to dodge. After Hellfire, no one should do anything that will cause them animation lock, reason being is right after hellfire Ifrit will follow up with either vulcan blast, dash, plume, or eruption. This is one of the key reasons mages need to start casting as soon as they see hellfire. So they are out of animation lock once hellfire is over.
Also as a warning Ifrits 'tp' moves (eruption and so forth) will happen at roughly a 5 second interval instead of the 10 second interval at 50% and 15 second interval when Ifrit is at 75%
