Depends on how you define "unisex". Everything that's not on the most extreme ends of the feminity/masculinity spectrum?

For HW, it's almost a fully even 50:50 split between male and female designs, they were literally taken from female/male characters in another game respectively (Type 0 to be precise). Similar with stormbloods release, there were two short cuts, one feminine and one masculine - If you're searching for "feminine short cuts for women" or "feminine short styles" on google, you'll find the prior one. But it's unisex because it's not long, right? I wager it also needs frills and ribbons to be feminine. Or sth. 4.1 brought the cute bun haircut for females and the frizzy samurai ponytail for males - Very clearly unisex hairstyles.

Now they're doing it again, there's one male and a female cut. Have you seen that super short hairstyle with Stormblood with the side-shave? It's very clearly masculine and that hasn't stopped them from making it. Do you see that long cut? It's very clearly feminine and that hasn't stopped them from making it. Making things available to both genders hasn't stopped them from making gender specific hairstyles. That notion is rubbish. The notion that they are doing unisex hairstyles to avoid gender specific hairstyles is also rubbish. The evidence goes very clearly against that. They aren't stretching to make them work for everyone. Cinque's hair DOESN'T work for everyone. How much evidence do you need before you abandon the idea?

They always do the same, they pick one male and one female hairstyle. You simply either like them or you don't. With this and the last patch, i.e. "lately", they've actually been giving the females quite overtly feminine cuts. And yet people still cling to the "unisex" idea. It's been disproven over and over. And it's getting tiring to read. The only thing you achieve by asking them to stop doing what they are doing right now is to get 50% less hairstyles total, because they already design the hairstyles with male/female in mind and have done so all this time, whether the hairstyles are fitting your ideal of "feminity" or "masculinity" or not.

    Unisex:
    adjective
    1.
(especially of clothing or hairstyles) designed to be suitable for both sexes.
    1.
a style in which men and women look and dress in a similar way.

This is how I would define unisex.

    And for the visual explanation:

Not only is the selected hair unisex, but the other 19 styles shown on that page are shared as well.

SE is getting lazy with the hair. Instead of designing unique styles for the sexes, they're most definitely favoring the one-size-fits-all approach.

I disagree with you Skivvy, a hairstyle without gender restriction does not necessarily mean it looks unisex, there are masculine and feminine features regardless of restrictions. That hair you linked looks very masculine to me, and the twin buns to the right of that hairstyle looks very feminine.

You just want to restrict who can use them for no reason, they have shown they can implement masculine or feminine hairstyles without preventing the other gender from using it.

Well, going back to what I said earlier - I find the majority of the unisex styles to be ugly. Obviously this is just my opinion, as I stated before. I think trying to squeeze a style onto both males and females is limiting the styles we see, and I feel we're getting bland styles as a result.

But my point is that not every hairstyle without restriction is trying to fit both males and females, many of them are clearly trying to fit only males, or only females, even if they allow the other gender to use it. There's nothing androgynous or masculine about the twin buns, that's 100% feminine, and I'd bet anything if they disallow males from using it the hairstyle would still look exactly as it does right now.

It is true there are several hairstyles that are neutral, but it's not true that every hairstyle is neutral. The limitation of style doesn't exist, they have already shown they can do it.

Hmm, I see where your'e coming from. I suppose I'm just in the camp that feels not every style needs to be identical for the male and female counterparts. Or if they are going to stick with the unisex styles, at least just take the time to add subtle differences between the sexes to help them fit better. Currently, it looks like they just stretch the styles onto the various head shapes/sizes - and a lot of them look bad as a result.

I think they're doing what we've been asking them to do for ages: just give everyone all the styles, regardless of who it might be "intended for". I'm not going to use the new hime cut any more than I'm going to use the pompadour but I like having the option. And judging by what I see when I people-watch, others appreciate the options as well. Whether the styles are masculine, feminine, or androgynous in any given patch is just luck of the draw- this time it came up feminine and androgynous. Maybe next time it'll be manly and androgynous and you'll hear people grumbling about "tomboys" and "eww men gross where's my cute hair" instead. :P
