I think before we seeing the traits and them in action it will be hard to say who will be the main tank.

This time the changes will be really heavy so the best is to wait 1.20 for now...it's just like WHM...when i read it the first thing that came in mind:

"Instantly recovers HP from everyone in range" = Benediction
"Casts spell without cast or recast time" = Chainspell
"Burns all MP to explode everything" = Astral Flow (yeah, i know it's holy)

So the first thought was "WTF! FFXI 2hrs whore!"...but obviously it won't be. I must say i'm curious to see this...and i want those who comemorated so much retaliation WSs now being used on miss crying blood...onlt Jarring Strike left AND class-exclusive.

But after reading that seems like now it will be more PLD as 1-on-1 tanking and WAR on multiple target tanking...they looked very directed to me so i do think solo tanking from MRD will be like fighting great buffalo...you will not be even close to the full potential against single targets...way more than it is now.

    But they really got me curious this time...i just wish we had some test server to see it before going live... ; ;

Too early to tell how these changes are going to shape things.

Just look at PLD trait's from XI:
    http://wiki.ffxiclopedia.org/wiki/Paladin#Job_Traits

When we see the traits for XIV, it won't be surprising if they borrow some to seal Paladin's role as a 'main tank', since a lot of XIV's encounters thus far are generally singular targets, some with adds but a lot are 1:1.

I think people are coming at this from the wrong angle.

The first relies on you NOT taking damage to work the second and third requires you to have your back to a wall, and none of the above are really damage reducing abilities.
Correct that is the shtick of the gladiator/paladin.

The Marauder/Warrior revolves around being offensive, redirecting damage and absorbing hp as there means of self sufficiency. There is a reason why the class is a bag of hp.

Different styles reaching the same end.

PLD Abl. 3 (exclusive) Grants imperviousness to melee attacks. Effect fades upon moving.

Anyone see that one? thats one sexy ability.

    Edit:
The way I see how MRD/WAR going to work.. I think its either kill or be killed. PLD on the other hand seems to have the abilities to survive more punishing hits.

I have both Gladiator and Marauder leveled so I'll use whatever works per encounter. But I hope it works out that Gladiator/Paladin will be better than Marauder/Warrior in an encounter like Ifrit where there's a single mob. It's not fair that currently Marauder is better because it can output more damage, making threat easier to manage, and actually has a working defensive mechanism. (Parry vs Broken Block)

I'm curious to see how block will play out after the patch.

Really the only thing is Marauder does more damage, that's it. Gladiator can tank Ifrit with no issues.

    Edit:
Don't get me wrong, block is broken as-is and Gladiator's have subpar DPS, but they can still do their job effectively on single-target mobs. I agree with you though, I want to see Gladiator tanking single target mobs and Marauder tanking trash. Like I stated earlier in the thread, it looks like they will each be good tanks in their own regard, but stacking a WAR & PLD on top of each other means potentially fun boss fights with lots of trash.

MRD is not the top tank of the game, it is prefered in some situations because of AoE and damage, they still take more damage then a GLD, come 1.20 and 1.21 GLD will get his AoEs as well as heals and on top of that have even higher defenses. I see glad quickly becoming the prefered tank until speed runs.
