On October 4th, 2010, the highest recorded population was between 45 and 50 thousand. By October 25th, 2010, the recorded population was around 36 thousand. After those stats were published, SE removed the ability to see server populations. I imagine we're somewhere around 20 to 30 thousand now. We're definitely below launch numbers (45-50 thousand active players.)
I tend to ignore standards and go YYYY/MM/DD because every other method says, "Suck it, ability to auto-sort by date in an alphanumeric database."
I like being able to find s#!t.
That said, the feature to view how many people are currently playing is already in the game, Square Enix just has to turn it the $(@^ on again. When the game first flopped, they actually disabled it so we couldn't check for ourselves and see how bad it was doing.
I forgot how disgusted I was with that tactic, so thanks for bringing that back to the surface.
Dear SE: Turn it back on. Thanks.

Agreed. It was pretty dirty of SE to remove it. What amazed me was a good portion of the community SUPPORTED this measure and tried to justify it by saying it was bad for the community that people should know how our server populations are falling (I'm sure it was directly influenced by that chart that Japanese players were distributing around). This is no better than a politician trying to cover up a fuck up they did. It just makes it THAT much more obvious that they fucked up.That said, the feature to view how many people are currently playing is already in the game, Square Enix just has to turn it the $(@^ on again. So definitely, +1, turn it back on. It's in the game SE, you know it, everyone who played the game since release knows it. And hey, the populations are increasing! That should help your PR - that's the reason why you turned it off in the first place, RIGHT?

A steady seller ? A STEADY SELLER ? 1 year and some months later, still not sold 1million copy's.
I play for the most part at the end of the week / weekend due to school, so my numbers may be inflated by weekend numbers, but I see a lot of people on Selbina, my screen can only load 40 at a time but hey I see a lot of different 40 people just in Uldah, and if I see more than 20 people in Gridania on my server, thats a good population day for Gridania! I was told by people on Besaid that Besaid population is on par with Selbina if not a little less but who knows, I think its because Besaid and Selbina were "official" w/e servers, like Selbina the JPs wanted it for themselves but XI players worldwide wanted it to, and then the french also said "its the francophone server" so its looking like a weird America from back in the day if Japan was one of the powers also. And Besaid is official RP I heard. I would love to know the exact population I think they said we'll get this when we pay for the game and have the /sea all functions which are pre 2.0 and at the very latest at 2.0. At least this thread tells SE we're still interested in that. I understand though that while the game isn't in its hottest state the people who write articles , basic free marketing, might slam XIV for its numbers and that leads to a vicious cycle worse than now of people not wanting to pick up the game.
http://xivpads.com/ I think has the closest numbers for just people who updated their game for a patch, it doesn't automatically reflect those who play though.
