But why should we be even part of the group that will go on an epic adventure when nobody even knows our name? Who in the real world would be fine with never getting any credit after helping to slay a big evil or do something else great? I mean we would still play a big part in slaying the evil or solving the problem but instead of getting at least some credits we will stand back in the shadow and let a NPC get it all. That does not sound nice. Also how did the NPC even find us? We are always asked to do certain things because they can trust us. They would not have such a trust in us if we are just common adventurers so why would they even hire us?

Letter from the Producer LIVE Part IX Q&A Summary (10/30/2013)
Q: Will there be any maintenance fees or other costs for housing, besides the cost of the land and house?
A: In older MMOs, such as Ultima Online, there was a house maintenance fee you had to pay weekly, but in FFXIV: ARR we decided against this system. Similarly, these older MMOs also had a system where your house would break down if you didn’t log in after a while in order to have you continue your subscription, but this is a thing of the past and we won't have any system like that.

Good, we are humans and friends after all. But the first role of the WoL is to save the world, why not put more interesting parts of why you were chosen by Hydealyn. I mean, we don't need to be all the time "superpowerful" but we need to see sometime why we are the hero.
We stopped the Ascians to start a 8th umbral era in Azys Lla (they wanted to wake up the war triads).
Also we know that the Ascians manipulate the Garlean politic, so it is for world peace to beat some sense in the Garleans again.

Heh heh OP.. next time you feel like you are the chosen one. Load up PVP. =p

As for the other things. I did ask for "Imperial Tribe Quests" in one of my threads.

And finally... the harsh world... which I protected my guild mates..

I think this one of the most misunderstood aspects of this game. The story is written so that we are intentionally the hero, that's very true. However, it is not done to stoke our ego; quit the contrary a major theme to the story is how even though we are the hero, we are limited in what we can do. We can't save everyone, we have a role we're expected to play, and duties we're expected to perform regardless of our own desires. I believe this was done intentionally to help distinguish this game from Square's other MMORPG, FFXI. (Dragon Quest X doesn't count because it's not available in all markets.) In FFXI, the players are just adventurers trying to make it in the world who wind up getting involved in significant events that few people outside of the those involved know about. Two different games, two different stories.

I'm also pretty sick of being the "chosen one" in rpgs, hence why I stopped caring about this game's story very early on. It's just tired and repetitive and overdone. Yes yes, I know-with great power comes great responsibilities, you can't save everyone, you're not perfect despite the fact that you regularly kill gods and mend nations with your actions, etc. I just don't care anymore.

Yeah, thats pretty good, the Wol is pretty good at what he/she does, but neither can be everywhere nor its perfect. If you want something killed the Wol is awesome, if you go tactics/politics the Wol can usually at least hold its own but some like Alphinaud/Raubahn are much better suited to those roles or the Scions when some knowledge is needed (Urianger/Yshtola usually).

The Wol is far from perfect outside its main expertise and has lots of weak points that are fortunately covered with other characters help

I thought the entire point to Stormblood was to give WoL a backseat until the ending? I mean only Ishgard love the hell out the "WoL" in my opinion.... I feel the SB succeeded...

You should pay attention to the Stormblood story, where the WoL is just a companion of the true hero Lyse ^^

What exactly would you be doing as a normal adventurer? Not fighting primals. Not meeting with royalty. Several dungeons would be inaccessible. You'd never make it past ARR zones... as someone who came from a mmo with no plot and no central hero it just feels pointless...

I don't like being the chosen one all that much. Not so much b/c of being a vanilla adventurer, but rather seeing situations like the end of the 2.55 MSQ end with more of the redacted spread across the ceiling of the banquet room, like marmalade on toast, than on the floor. At least if I had it my way.

Apply additional acts of ultra-violence against "greater goods" as necessary. Ultra-violence that is morally superior mind you, to the crap I've seen that has long passed on "I have no mouth and I must scream" levels of "I want to kill the everything, yet I cannot" on the feels scale.
