I'm pretty sure he's referring to the graveyard by camp drybone when he mentions a "small ruined graveyard in a desert wasteland". But anyway, as others have said there are tons of beautiful and solemn places in this game if you only look for them. I'm sure you can find something to suit your needs. Perhaps we'll end up seeing another 'proper' place of mourning when more content comes out, too. I'm suspecting there may be one for all people who died fighting to liberate the two nations in SB. I mean, I wouldn't hold my breath for it but it seems slightly possible.

Well, it might sound odd, but maybe SE could give is a “haurchefant” style headstone we could place inside or outside of our houses or apartments. Allowing us to make our own place of mourning for our fallen irl warriors of light.

You can build a place of mourning in your FC room/apartment/yard.

Like 99% of JP players we used the Oriental Altar to set up a little area of mourning for our favourite story NPC inside our house.

just do what WoW players did, use a graveyard in the game.

Some game companies do as little memorials to big fans, like the astronaut suite in Overwatch for the chinese kid who gave his life doing a kind deed the day before overwatch was out.

Bethesda doing various memorials to big fans who died during game developments.

but mmo are hard to add such stuff on a whim. Just by an alter, and have a vigil at the graveyard.

I personally already see to much irl drama/politics entering the game with fc being "pro women" "pro PoC" etc. i rather they not sullen the memories of the fallen with a gimmicky memorial people will not remember is there/ or why its there in 4-5 years or so.

I recall before eternal bonds became a thing, going to the church-like temple in the Black Shroud was done to pay respects to a fellow player that passed away.

Actually, as a suggestion, ARR zones have the small enshrined stones in different locales as a means to pay respects to the respective diety. While not a gravesite, some of the locales may be a good spot to just sit and take a moment to quietly reflect.

Ralgr'd Reach has a tomb of graves, too, but it's not any less haphazard as Drybone as it's the soldiers just trying to give their friends proper funerary rights out of respect.

Unfortunately, since FFXIV doesn't refect any particular real world religion to an exact degree, making a proper area that's meant for us to pay respects to lost friends in the game is not possible. Different players have different ideas on what such a place should be.

ya you are thinking of codex's vigil.

WoW had a similar one. it was all over youtube in the 2000's

We need a real place in game that we can go...
You already have a church and a graveyad in thanalan.

But, that aside, I think FFXIV is a game that you play in order to have fun, not a substitute for the real world. In case you need to mourn, you should do it in the real world with your loved ones (if they are still here).

I think y'all might be missing the implications that if you lose a buddy that you communicated with primarily or exclusively via the game (like say, a static member), mourning can be especially difficult since you lack any sort of central grounding or the physical side of accepting the loss.

I mean, if a player I ran content with multible times a week that lived in another country suddenly passed, I really wouldn't have much of a real world support system because of the distance and nature of internet friendships. Even if attending the IRL funeral were feasible, or just visiting their resting site, that could possibly put their family and friends in incredibly uncomfortable sorts on top of the immense loss.

Basically, the challenge of finding closure is different in this environment. I think OP is asking for a spot in game to act as a sort of general memorial for the friends we made in-game that were lost.

FFXIV might be an escapist theme park, but the people behind avatars are real. This is just another point of respecting that.

Ok so when I posted this I had no idea so many people would be against the idea. I thought it would have been nice and that other people would have liked to have it.

I was wrong. I apologize for offending everyone.
