Healer & Tank DPS (WoW vs FFXIV)

    Anyways, so hi.

One thing I wanted to talk about in terms of really interesting differences between FFXIV and WoW is what the community focuses on in terms of performance in a raid or party.

For some reason there is a HUGE emphasis on tank and healer DPS. I get it, tanks and healers DPSing = faster kills, even if their DPS isn't par to that of a legit DPS class. It's not that it doesn't make sense, but why is it such a huge focus here? Are the fights specifically tuned for needing the tanks and healers to DPS in order to meet DPS checks? Why is this sentiment not in WoW? Tanks and heals maybe might compare damage for shiggles or fun but nobody expects it there. Nobody points out your damage as a healer or tank, like ever.

What is the combat/boss design/combat environment/whatever you wanna call it, that somehow makes tank and healer DPS a bigger topic of conversation here than in WoW?

Because casuals like to copy bleeding edge raiders here. Also, healer dps is waaaaaay OP.

is there a need to say more?

Oh yeah, an actual correction : Idiots like to blame dps checks not being met on healers or tanks rather than acknowledging that their dps as dps roles is low-tier (to not say laughable tier).

But since in FFXIV using a parser to show them they are trash players is a one-way ticket to ban-city, they can act however high and mighty as they want and the GMs don't care.

Mechanics skipping mostly. The harder you smash a fight, the less bananas you have to deal with

Also, tanks and healers put out up to two thirds of a dps' damage, which is nothing to scoff at

It's because 1. healing and tanking gameplay themselves are very simple and don't require much attention, so there's a lot of room for them to focus on DPS, 2. DPS checks in raid content are often quite demanding and most groups need their healers and tanks to contribute in order to beat them when content is current, and 3. healer and tank DPS is really strong, so the contribution is significant (it's common for me to be top DPS as WHM in expert dungeon trash pulls and close and sometimes above DDs on bosses, similarly tanks can bypass DDs even in raid content).

Mainly, I don't like seeing a healer standing around for extended amounts of time doing nothing when they could be safely dealing damage and pushing the fight along. It feels very lazy to me. That being said, tanks seem to be taking more dmg in SB so far, so at least healers have more to do besides twiddle their thumbs.

Only Healing in this game for most things would mean standing around doing nothing over 50% of the time.

It's been said time and again, confirmed by the devs themselves, that dps check design doesn't take tank and healer dps into account. Stop blaming the tank and healers for your own inability to learn your job.

Another reason there's so much emphasis on tank/healer dps is there's no encouragement for dps to get better, and it's still easy for a dps to not realize they're doing poorly. Actually had a friend who thought he was really good on SAM, then I queued with him into O4N and absolutely dominated.

There's not even any element of threat management anymore. As long as they are hitting buttons on the mob they keep aggro.

    2. DPS checks in WoW on current Mythic content is also difficult, not really a difference there.

    3. This is the only point I'd understand but given the first 2 are relatively true between both, why does it matter? Any DPS helps, right?
