Said it in these threads before, and I'll say it again:
No shortening and keep surnames. It's a great idea and should stay.

fist name, last name = 90+% chance to keep your name in the future.
first name only = when servers merger good luck keeping the name you want, if you dont login first.
I like having last names. It allows people to put in more creativity and be more unique. People now can still be unique (and be allowed by the game to have THE name - without having to resort to ridiculous alteration of the name itself, like those "Sephiroth" someone stated as example) even when the name is the same as other people, which is because we have last name. People who play together can also use same last name on purpose to express that they're of the same family. That is both cute and convenient.
Also, what would happen to us if we're to lose last name if we happen to have same first name as other people in the game? Now, the battle to claim the original name begins. *fear*

Like-farming aside, I've no love for the idea of shortening names - and there'll be trouble if they remove surnames.
I could just about tolerate name shortening if it preserved the forename/surname system, but it'd still feel pretty bleh. But if they remove surnames, there goes being able to have whatever forename (or surname for that matter) you fancy, the fun of meeting someone with one name the same as yours.. it's one of Final Fantasy XIV's big strengths.
The only way removig surnames would work, for me, is if they took a page from Phantasy Star Online's book and linked characters to unique numeric identifiers, with names just being there for players' sake. That way, players can still have whatever name they want .. but it has disadvantages. Aside from not being able to have a surname, simple '/t <name> <message' communication commands stop working or become significantly more inconvenient, for instance, and tells can realistically only go through clicking through the friends list.
So.. yeah for goodness' sake do not do anything to damage the forename/surname setup, and I'm hardly keen on name shortening that wouldn't harm surnames, either.

I like my name and surname, but sending /tells and invites can sometimes be an ordeal. Think I'll go for shorten.
For the long run now, though, you only need to type /tell PlayerWith LongName <message here> (in case they don't send you a tell first, so you can't use CTRL+R or the syntax <r>) just once then it's saved to your "audience" list.
Then later (even after logging out then logging in or shutting down the game and restarting it again) you can do like /tell Pl<TAB-KEY> or /partycmd add Pl<TAB-KEY> to make the system recall and give you the list of words (like in auto-translator) so you can select the wanted name instantly.
I don't want to change my name at all! Please let me keep my name just like it is.![]()

Last names are pointless and its really annoying when you have to type /pcmd add "ridiculously long stupid name"
Except it's annoying as **** when it randomly deletes people that you regularly talk to for no reason. For the long run now, though, you only need to type /tell PlayerWith LongName <message here> (in case they don't send you a tell first, so you can't use CTRL+R or the syntax <r>) just once then it's saved to your "audience" list.

Though I'd rather stick with how it is now.
Whilst I may just use the name "Falcus" in most places I still like my first name since it references my original character from XI.
Ive always wanted both first and surnames in a mmo. Alot of other MMOs only has first names, and the playerbase has suggested the game producer to allow surnames to allow more variety in naming their characters.
