    Gauges, HUD, and other attempts to bring the DPS floor up, won't work

    Is this really going to work? I'm watching this three farking hour long video from the so called live letter something that someone pointed me to for info on the new expansion (didn't know these they had regular videos like this), and I'm slowly coming to grips with the design mentality behind the changes. The tldr reason seems to be, 'we're streamlining, simplifying, condensing, abilities, cross class actions, etc and moving to a more visual HUD to bring the DPS floor up from the 30%+ difference between the noobs and the pros.'

    Pardon my oversimplification, but is this really going to work? Has anyone ever thought, man, my DPS would suck less if I only had a giant graphical representation of my skill timers taking up a chunk of the middle of my screen! Are the rere's really going to stop being really bad at their job just because some logo starts flashing red and blinking screaming 'use your damn cool-down/combo abilities now!'?

    This will turn into a wall, but I've spent a lot of years playing MMO's of various kinds and it really seems that when dev's try to overcome basic human stupidity that it just doesn't end well for anyone. That said I do like one aspect of this change is that it will reduce the action bloat that has crept into the game and I like not having to level up random classes just to get the stupid cross class ability I need and then proceed to ignore that class because I never ever intend to play it.

    Things that won't be fixed by adding HUD elements, reducing ability bloat, actions, etc:

    -raise the dps floor
    -what's a chocobo? - by a level 60 DK
    -how does teleport work? You mean I don't have to keep walking back to Idleshire all the way from Gridania every time I die?
    -Where the * are the dungeons? What do you mean I have to do the main story quests? You can't tell me how to play! Questing is for noobs! If I wanted to quest, I wouldn't have spent all these months killing mobs in the world! And why does nothing drop loot when I kill it? I'm still in greys but I keep seeing all these players in blues, where do they drop? Besides I'm saving the quests for my alt.
    -You know what the problem is with this game? I can't find the auction house in the major cities. I keep seeing these market boards, but the game won't let me use them.
    -Wiping constantly to Proto-Ultima in DS.
    -by a 60 ACN: What's a job stone? Why do my heals suck? Why can't I summon my fairies?
    -Ice mages

    Edit: its not the size of the HUD UI that's the problem, its that it won't fix anything. The problem with people putting out really low numbers has nothing to do with the UI, its the player.

    YoshiP is totally on to this whole visual representation will fix the Extreme DPS difference. Holy crap, because I had to post this image to explain myself:

    How about we see it in action before we declare it won't work, eh?

    edit: As for whether or not it will make people better? I don't know, but based on the number of people that use Weakauras on WoW.. it just might. We shall see.

    You can edit your main post to get around the character limit if that's why you're breaking down your point into multiple posts.

    As far as this though, I'm not convinced it'll work either, but I'll give it a fair shot.

    As I'm sure you are well aware, it takes more than one person to be able to kick a player from a duty, so in all those instances there were at least two people agreeing they'd be better off without you tanking.

    I'm going to be ok with the HUDs if I can resize them and they also scale their resolution. Otherwise I would like the option to turn it off. Especially the AST one.

    I don't know about the resoluton, but he was shown resizing them during the Live Letter.

    From what I have seen how are they simplifying it? There is no question that there are a bit too many skills at this point especially with incoming SB ones so a trim is not a bad thing. The Gauges will just bring some useful information into a more visible spot. Unless I am missing something I don't see how this is a extreme combat change to anything. Bad players will still perform rubbish dps. None of these changes will make someone play better, just more accessible.

    You can resize it or turn it off completely like any other of the HUD's elements.
    Personally I think those new HUDs elements are just for the coolness of their aesthetics more than their actual usefulness.
    I like that they bring a unique feeling to each job with these.
    As for the skill merging/deletions they are doing the right thing. We had totally useless skills nobody ever used just taking space in our bars.
    We are also getting some new so the number of the skills at lvl 70 will be the same or slightly less than now which is totally fine.

    It's pretty much an official WeakAuras which is nice I guess. It gives a bit of guidance instead of the game outright telling you what to do. (It won't function correctly if you are doing stuff completely wrong like Todd the No Enochian Ice Mage) That's about it. Some of them don't look that great or are too busy where I would rather look at buff/debuff icons.

    The overall battle system changes will probably do more. 30% gap is kind of being generous though.

    They are only bringing the DPS floor up meaning people will be doing more damage than what they were doing before because now buffs won't be as prevalent. It's not about making a graphic to increase DPS that is there just so people can keep track of things easier and from what we have seen it seems like it will work.

    Most are simple in design for most to see it and understand what it is showing. The main changes they are making are the changes to abilities and how some combos work. Let's look at the DRG for example, Before you needed to manage BotD(Blood of the Dragon) by using geirskogul which reduced the timer of the buff but then you had skills which increased the timer as well with RNG skills so you had to manage it going up and down. Now they are making it so the timer never goes down with geirskogul but only increase and the 4th tier skills don't seem random anymore you can just use it one after the other. So in theory if people just play normally not optimally it would still be a increase of the dps floor because the jobs have become a bit more simpler to approach.

    I'm wondering how I can say this but the whole point of the change is to make it so there are less mistakes that can be made so the overall DPS floor goes up, while still making it possible for people to mix max their jobs. So in a way it forces the DPS floor to increase based on how they designed it.
