Can't recall Yoshi P. ever saying Viera were too close to Miqo'te and Au Ra. Can't recall him having ever said anything about Viera before at all.

The reason people want Viera is simple; they have reasonable expectations that function within the limit of the game developer's resources. The creation of a, 'Beast Tribe,' like race would be a drastic change in terms of art assets for models. To put it simply, its far too much work, particularly for a race that only a small minority of the playerbase would hold interest in. If you look at the player polls from before Au Ra, interest in a, 'Beast Tribe,' like race was absolutely minimal.

So not only is it easier to add a race like the Viera for the developers, its also something more players would play.

From an interview with Yoshi P in 2015:

"The issue with the Viera is that, if you look at them, they're basically humanoid save for their long rabbit ears and their heels. We already have a mostly humanoid race with animal ears in the Mi'qote. When we looked at those initial Viera concepts, it just seemed like a Mi'qote with bunny ears instead of cat ears. It simply wasn't different enough. Especially when we did the male designs… they didn't look beastly enough, they were just a little too cute. We wanted to make something that was original to the Final Fantasy series, and to do that, we decided to step away from the Viera."

Ah, thanks much. Good to know.

Though I think we can agree they accomplished their goal. They made the Au Ra, an original race for the series. Hopefully they learned from it as well as Au Ra males are not super popular among players. We don't need "Beastial," males. If anything we have a severe deficit of cute males.

Wouldn't know about phoenix, but you see like, 4 females for every 1 male on Balmung, and to be honest, I'm being generous with that estimate. Its probably closer to 7 females per 1 male.

I wouldn't call Male Au Ra bestial. More like twinky guys who glued some horns to their face.

They suffer from what I call Male Highlander Face Syndrome. Namely, male highlanders only have three face types; insomniac, rage, and derp. Au Ra males are just stuck with Rage faces.

As argued before, hands and feet will be redesigned to be typical human hands-feet (so redesigning gear won't be needed) and the tail will be removed because it'll be a clipping disaster (hidden completely under gear or weirdly clip through it). Speaking of, the ears will either clip through the top of head gear (like Au Ra horns), have giant awkward ear socks, or if SE are feeling extra lazy; be completely hidden.

This is why I've argued to just making them a third clan for either Elezen or Miqo'te. If so little visual effort is going into making them, why not expand on the current races? They're most likely not going to be called Viera, after all.
