Well... whether FFXIV dies or lives is entirely dependent on how stubborn/greedy SE wants to be, imo.

As far as the video goes...

He did make several very valid points.

-F2P did change the face of MMO's.

-Perhaps they should look at a F2P model at least temporarily, or otherwise.

I'll be honest now. I'd forgotten about the Star Wars: The Old Republic... but I can't help but think that they're rushing it- much like they were rushing with WoW's Cataclysm.

So my question is... Have they learned nothing from what happened last year?

Personally, I don't think FFXIV has much to fear from Star Wars because the fan base is completely different. Certainly there is a middle ground where the fan's overlap but generally speaking it is a different ball of wax. Not to say that Star Wars isn't a brand to be reckoned with.

That being said, it'd be dumb for SE to try and rush this because it's rushing that's really going to kill it.

You are also forgetting squares upcomming titles and recent ones. Duex Ex was a huge hit, FFXIII-2 will probably sell 5million copys, tomb raider will sell 3-4 million.

I do not think square is even worried about money atm, they are better off them most devs are these days.
I myself don't doubt that SE will go bankrupt anytime soon, but I'm very sure yoshi and wada do not have the authority to keep a struggling game alive (if we assume the game will still be struggling a year from now). Investors don't like investing in companies that make bad decisions. That being said, if the game doesn't show as much revenue as they anticipate then it's not unlikely they will cancel the game. They do make promised in hopes of keeping customers mind you. It's not unheard of. Take starcraf:ghost by blizzard, highly anticipated several years back, but never finished or released.

Big company, highly anticipated game, then cancelled project

Not a good business practice to continue a project that's losing money instead of bringing in. Company may still be around but project might be cancelled. I really do believe if they don't get enough subscribers during the next year before ver2.0 they may cancel

I'm really looking forward to Jan. 1st.

But seriously. While I have a few gripes with the game, I still think it CAN be good/better (before 2.0), so that's why I'm staying. Some people here have like 0.00 love for XIV. If you hate this game so much, why are you even playing? It's been said.. how many times?
It's your money, and yours alone. Do with it what you think is right.

Also, having a meaningful pro and con discussion doesn't equal breathing fire and calling people names. Yes, I think feedback is important, whether it be positive or negative. Though, I'll happy when some people are gone for good as they contribute nothing to either side but a bad mood.

I meant the whole forum, not just this thread, by the way.

F2P marketplaces are annoying/retarded. It is not a reliable way of attaining revenue and implies that you don't need skill to get what you want.

No, a thousand times no. This is what every FF is against. This should not be an exception.

Well F2P with a cash shop does work, I have seen it work well in many games, but it is not for all MMORPGs

Pretty much all the Korean clone MMORPGs, cash shops work great for, but big budget games like WoW, FFXI, FFXIV, SW: tOR, it does not.

For instance, Diablo III, Blizzard's new MORPG, is going to have a rel money trading auction house. As soon as I heard about this, I lost complete interest in the game, why? Because I don't like games where people can buy their way to the top.

SE goes for the WoW model

But as popular as it is, only WoW has seen success with it. It's a pretty crap model. Other games wither and die (or go F2P).

Would be cool to hear what Yoshida thinks about this (or is he just going blindly forward without addressing the fact, hoping for best).

In that way this prediction might turn out to be true.

I just can laugh at people that think SE will go bankrupt soon.

If nothing they will push out a FFVII remake and save their asses for another 5 years ....

FFXIV is not sponsored by investors, so Square Enix can do whatever they want. There will be no investors whining and crying about it. I do not believe they will ever pull the plug in FFXIV. They would not have put in so much time and effort if they didn't have a proper plan or didn't believe it will all work out in the end.

It will never got millions of subscribers, but that was never the goal I guess. If it can beat FFXI numbers during CoP it will be a great achievement already.

Using this logic, we all convinced ourselves to enjoy the games we enjoy. You like tetris? You convinced yourself to enjoy it. You like Super Mario? You convinced yourself to enjoy them. You like Zelda? Please, no one could like that, you convinced yourself to like it.

What I have shown you is reality. What you remember, that is the illusion.

If it got a Japanese release a few felt it would do poorly, especially if it's heavily western style MMORPG but Japan actually like Bioware games, but in the same vein as "It's going to die"..nope, that's one of the differences I noticed in media between the nations, one is generally always doom and gloom for less popular games.
