If anything, I'll probably turn into one of the people that just comes and goes with the patches rather than stay constantly subbed.

Been playing since 1.0 launch so I don't think I'm going anywhere. If I didn't like the game now I would not be playing and the day I stop enjoying it I'll stop playing.

In ARR the world seemed more "real" in a sense. When lvling i saw items with names, etc mythril axe, and i could see on the item itself it was made of mythril. This consistensy is what made me love the game in the first place. However in HW this consistensy seems to have dissapeared and when pointing it out it was just "working as intended".
If the consistensy in lore, the world, keeps being absent i will strongly reconsider moving on to another mmo. The fanservice seems to come before the game. I am aware that this is a "fanservice mmo" but it is also a mainline final fantasy title. From what i have gathered the world seemed more its own in 1.0 while in 2.0 they have taken monsters and models directly from other FF games. Gone are the days of trying to be a unique game. I know reoccuring monsters are a thing in final fantasy, but mostly the reoccurance is in name only. Some designs are inspired from each other. In ffxiv the models seem directly ripped from the games.
It bothers me they are making an entire continent the size of aldenard in one expac, even going as far as saying the zones wont be larger than HW nor more numerous. The identity of the game seems to be dissapearing each patch and i am sorry to see it go this way. I came for a large game with big lively worlds. In arr i got the lively part. In HW i got the medium sized part. The zones of HW are unfinished, having missing textures, bland colours, even at some places missing ground.
The lore team has gone out of their way to create this huge and expansive backstory only to see it wasted. And that is a shame. The story itself got better at the end of ARR after having had a very boring 1-50 lvling process. The lvling in HW was better, but not great. The story patches thereafter were rushed. This is clear of the WoD arc. The story gets more inconsistent.
Although this might be a nitpick, the lorebook i received seems to be of a lesser quality than the NA /JP counterparts. Its spine is very weak and the book itself has cardboard like pages and plastic-ish covers. This difference in quality is not reassuring and shows me that as a EU player i am not worth a proper book, despite having to pay double price for getting it to my country (C'mon SE. I can get stuff from sent china for half the price of this). I daresay it would count as false advertising.
I'm going no where, because the MMO I truly want will never be made right and this is good enough.
You will not see a lot of 'I'll leave' replies here because those who don't like it left already. Pretty much only fans remain now who will keep their subs no matter what till servers shutdown. Will their numbers be enough for SE to keep old unchanging formula, who knows. After all, only money flow or lack of it can really force them to change anything.
I'm one of the few who would not be sticking around long. With XIV, I enjoyed my time for the first 8 months or so after launch, and then I started looking for other games to fill my time. I resub for a month here and there if they have some cute event items, but aside from that, I'm good. You will not see a lot of 'I'll leave' replies here because those who don't like it left already. Every MMO of course has it's gear grind once you hit endgame, but in my opinion, XIV fails miserably at making it feel fresh and diverse.
For quite awhile, the pattern has been 2 new dungeons, a new raid, new coil/alex level. Each dungeon has the same formula - trash - boss - trash - boss - trash - boss. Each raid has a near-identical pattern too. PotD mixed things up a bit (thank you Nyzul and Salvage!), but for the majority of content, it's all just rehashed each patch.
I'd like to pretend to be optimistic about Stormblood, but so far they haven't shown that they're willing to stray too far from their comfort zone.
Yoshida did a complete 180º between ARR and HW. While before he would talk about increasing the complexity, taking off the training wheels, even adding gear bonuses besides stats, now most of this interviews consists of him shooting down any idea of a more complex game, be it job specs, level cap character/spell progression, customization, gear bonuses, etc. He'll gladly tell people to just quit if they're bored.
So yeah, it's time to give up on this subject. The Heavensward model will continue.
As for me, I'm interested in Ala Mhigo. Been following their story since 2.0, and want to see how it will end, which is why I came back to this game. The only thing that would make me quit for good would be if Ala Mhigo didn't get enough attention, just like the (disappointing) Raubahn plot in 2.5. Considering that Square Enix are japanese devs and Doma is already butting in on what was expected to be the Ala Mhigo expansion, I'm worried. I have zero interest in yet another japanese setting, seen it over and over and over already.
I don't mind the formula so much, I'll be staying, maybe end up taking a break if something new comes out. Otherwise, I'll just keep plugging away at it.
I'm sticking around since I like the casualness of the game. Having to "adult" sucks (don't we all know that D: ), so it's nice to have a game where I won't fall behind if I need to take a break.
Probably the same thing I have been doing... get it, play through story- unsub until right before next expansion. Play through all the new story before expansion, get expansion, play through story, unsub.
I like the stories and running through content once. I just don't see the point of staying subbed and grinding. I end up subbing a couple months per expansion that way... so the cost is about comparable to a console game and I get about the same playtime out of it.
I used to play sandbox games and stay subbed to EQ for 5.5 years... but with the theme park style, I find I can get all the bang for my buck in a short time and unsub.
