Gareth, the dragoon at ffII, and the debut dragoon of the series, did have a (giant) wyvern pet, he just didnt use it in battle. So root-wise are indeed associated with wyvern/dragon companions but I would say the most trademark ability is of course JUMP! If he has jump, then its a dragoon :P

Jump and breath abilities were what mostly defined Dragoon in FFTA/A2. That and the spear line AoE attacks.

Dragoon without a wyvern is not a dragoon. I think they won't be a wyvern at start but they will implement it later.

There's lots of FF Lore to draw from with the Dragoon to come up with Abilities for the new Dragoon.

FFIV had elemental spears, and spears that could be used to cast magic.
    Jump and variations, nuff said.
Association to dragons, either through being close to them through spiritual bond, or dragon hunters.
Dragon's breath skills for curing HP/MP
Calling upon a Dragon's power to use offensively.
    Line Spear attacks
    Elemental Breaths

I think the wyvern (while I loved my Sasavi) should be kept to Vana'diel. It made it unique.

So you say Kain Highwind is not a real dragoon?

    Or Freija Crescent?

First Battle Pet we get is the chocobo.

Dragoon is not a typical pet class

Essentially i wouldnt just think about these classes and compare them with ffxi, its only 1 of many ff series, and almost all the jobs have differences throughout.

Also, jobs are supposed to be fairly similar to the class they come from, but with a specialized style.

drg doesnt need a wyvern, however, they may one day add pets as an option for more than one class, maybe then you ll get your wyvern.
Well FFXI is the only other version we can compare how things would work in an MMO setting. MNK in FFXI also had kicks (though mainly as an additional attack and part of some WSs) and they already had the rest of the traits you mentioned, high HP, eva/counter tanking, uses chakra..ect

so aside from some ranged chakra attacks, counter, and something like a status effect removing heal, i just dont see a ton there that makes it signifigently different from pug at this point. But like people are saying, they are not expecting more then something like that.

As for drg, they dont need the pet, but other then jumps, there has to be something esle added to make them more then just what they are now as LNC, but with jumps and a fancy name.

from what i remember of past FF games only 3 things as skills stand out, jump (all of them have) lancet (drain hp/mp) and summoning dragons to do something for them ( 7/9/11 and in tactics scaring them from the battle)

as long as they can make them stand out from the other DDs with a couple things im fine with it, doesnt have to be a pet.

I actually wouldn't mind there being a pet, but that was unique to FFXI. I'm sure its been stated plenty of times that Yoshida wants to steer clear of this game becoming FFXI-2. Not saying that it shouldn't be implemented, but the general idea would be to make Dragoon a bit different, perhaps without a companion. We still don't know much about the jobs yet though.
