    It's a little better than I expected.
I like adjusting their stats with training before sending them out to missions.

I'm disappointed we don't have more interaction with the squad members. I don't see the point in only being able to recruit preset characters instead of designing our own when the characters don't have any personality or dialogue so I'm hoping that SE plans on expanding upon them in the future.

No, I don't like them so far.
Mainly because they take friggin' 18(!!) hours.
With retainers, I can at least pay them more to interact with them once per hour. With the squad, it's mostly once per day (except for a bit of training).
I also dislike that I can only send 4 people and the other 4 have to stay at home. Why can't I send them out, too?

I thought they'd at least say funny little tidbits when you talk to them in the quarters, but nope, just their information pops back up.

Recruitment is kind of fun, I'll give you that. But even that is limited since you can't switch out members the way you like when they are out on a mission - which, again, takes a whopping 18 hours!

(Is it obvious yet that I hate it that there are no expensive but short-time missions?!)

That would be nice if there were shorter missions that cost more GC seals but you would level up too fast for their liking maybe.

Yeah my complaint is that they take too long as well. It would be better if the training routines took twenty minutes each, and the missions took between an hour and 18 hours randomly. At least then it's not "check on them once every hour for three, then check on them tomorrow".

18 hours is kinda too long, make it 12 hours would be perfect.

I'm enjoying leveling them and getting new squadies, and eventually will enjoy compulsively forming the 100% perfect squadron.

I really like how they all hang out and do stuff (even when not training) in the barracks. We easily could have gotten nothing but menus, but seeing them lounge around, or doing squats, or meditating etc. really makes it feel more like they're characters instead of just stats.

That said, the one thing that really pulls me out of thinking of them as characters instead of stats, is when I click on them to see what they have to say and it pulls up a literal stat sheet. Even if they just had generic dialogue repeated among them, it would be better than a stat sheet.

18 hour wait is perfect. Can send them out before I go to sleep then when I get out of work they are done.

    What are the rewards?

    - GC Promotion
    - Personal FC Buffs!!!!! Do people even read the patch notes? (Squadron Rationing Manual, Squadron Battle Manual, Priority Seal Allowance etc.) You no longer require an FC to get buffs!
    - Likely more crafting/gc materials (higher quantities)

Once we are promoted i can see the Squadron mission rewards changing to something like LARGE quantities of the old expensive GC Materials that are now required for all the new battle gear (Borax,Cashmere,Saurian, Razicsap etc.) to offset the demand.

I'm personally excited for these changes and i'm happy that they went this route rather than just allowing us to promote with seals. Yes its simply a slightly more engaging retainer venture system, but it's essentially making us work for our promotion with some minor storyline/cutscenes to make the grind to rank 40 a little more enjoyable.

One issue I have is that I'm a bit torn between whether to do the training in between missions when all members can take part in it to maximize experience, or to have extra members do the training while four are out on a mission in order to help make up for mission XP they're not getting and keep my squad members closer to the same level.

I've been going for the later option so far, and keeping them near the same level does give me more flexibility in rearranging which members to be in the missions team. But it means having to hold off on missions until training for the other members is available, and it slows down the advancement of my first four members (and therefore my own GC promotion).

I tried it out, but quickly lost interest. I found this kind of thing fun about 14-16 years ago when the internet was still new for me and games like OGame just became a thing. Now, that sort of timer gameplay kinda bores me, especially when it's as simplistic as squads seemed to be.

To each their own I suppose. I just wish they'd have put this sort of thing into the gold saucer where I can ignore it like triple triad.
