How can I tell if I am doing enough damage?

I did open SSS, but have never actually been there. I will definitely check it out. I'll try using the method to get an estimate of my damage by using the method described.

I never cast Doton or Katon on boss mobs. Always Suiton for TA or Raiton.
If it seems like the mobs will be living a long time, I will use Katon + Kassatsu + Doton, but if things are moving quickly, I'll use Katon + Kassatsu + Katon.

As for a parser, I don't want to use anything that even has a small chance of causing trouble. So I won't look into it.

It's often good to cast Fuma Shuriken instead of Raiton because you can clip your GCD (slowing your rotation) unless you time it absolutely perfectly and with the slashing debuff up it does almost as much damage as Raiton.

A parser won't cause you any problems with SE if you don't post your parses into the chat and if you don't discriminate players because of their dps.
