Newbies need info about how stats work, or how to unlock your chocobo, where to find that next quest, or what their role is in a party. You don't need to be a top tier player to mentor a newbie, you just need to know enough about the basics. A kindergarten teacher doesn't need to win the Nobel prize in Genetics to teach science. They just need to know enough to teach the beginner essentials.

Your post leads me to believe you don't really know what a mentor is.

All that stuff you mentioned is Endgame. By then I'm sure a player would no longer be considered a newbie and could probably get around to learning it on their own or from maybe a few tips here and there if they ask. Or the more plausible solution: Researching/Looking it up. There's lots of advanced guides out there that help a lot for content like this.

I actually removed my crown because I was the one getting bullied in dungeons. Now I only offer advice to those in the novice network because I know they're receptive to said advice and I'm happy to answer their questions.

I recently ran Ultima ex with/for a friend, and I hadn't done it in a long time so wasn't sure about the mechanics. When I asked a question ("shouldn't we be doing this for that mechanic?"), someone sniped "you tell me, you're the 'mentor' here". Very nice.

(I ended up replying that I was trying my best but I hadn't done this one in a long time and I got two comms out of it so I guess there were a few people on my side in the end.)

Mentor roulette has been putting me in dungeons with a lot of first timers, it can be kind of nice doing that. Having someone new and helping them complete content, it gives me a sense of satisfaction.

I would assume it's weighted towards putting with first timers and sprouts.

Hard to say, SE didn't clue us in to it's algorithm (as far as I know) and any evidence is purely anecdotal.

Don't take the behavior of a few bad eggs to represent a majority - let alone a VAST majority. Most Mentors DO want to help out. They aren't just here for the rewards.

Mentors aren't always professional. Mentors are not always knowledgeable about every trial or battle. But don't assume that a lack of professionalism or experience means that they only have their eyes on the prize.

You should feel like, "Oh, cool, I'll get a nice trinket in a couple years, after doing what I'd normally be doing anyway."

No one should be "grinding" for the mount. Just be a good mentor, and it will eventually fall into your hands. It's a perk, and a thank-you for being a mentor for a long, long time. If you're the kind of person who worries about whether you'll even still be playing the game in five years - well, you're not the sort of mentor this mount was meant to reward. It's something for players who are in it for the long haul.

Of course, I do realize that players DO grind for the mount, and that's their prerogative. I do urge them to be kind and patient in the instances they wind up in if they choose to do so. For some, this will fall on deaf ears, but enough will listen, I think.

Any system which puts in rewards to help people... will have many who just want the rewards. You want them to put a vote in, to help remove bad mentors? That can also be abused. The best they can do is not add rewards to a system that is there for people who wish to properly support newer players.

Too late now though, and SE like to give rewards for everything. They just don't like making lore useful for the relic step, heueheueuuee.

Most people just wanted a cool burger king crown to their name to show they like a whopper.

I've never once seen a Hyperion mentor discriminated against only for his mentor status.
Nor ever in any primal data centre instance.

The only thing that comes close is people giving sprouts the benefit of the doubt when they mess up a mechanic or two. It's easy to forgive newbies afterall.

Seems every topic about the novice network makes me like my own servers that much more. While it's not without it's spurts of drama it's certainly not as bad as some people claim theirs is.
