At least part of your problem is your gear.
Your chest is a DPS class chest
    Your belt is for casters
Your pants are for DPS classes and way out of date
Your feet are for DPS classes

Replace your chest, pants, belt, and feet with tanking gear and reattempt. (Example: your hands currently have more defense than your pants and shoes combined)

Update your weapon if you can as well, i think the GC might have something good for you.

In my opinion, the current FFXIV meta is as such,

    Tank:
PLD is easiest to learn, hardest to master
WAR is hardest to learn, easiest to master

    Healer:
WHM is easiest to learn, hardest to master
SCH is hardest to learn, easiest to master

    DPS:
BLM is easiest to learn, hardest to master
NIN is hardest to learn, easiest to master

This is why im all for swapping shield oath with sword oath as the skill rewards, it makes no sense why both warrior and Drk get their tank stances at 30 but pld has to wait 10 more levels. granted, hawkemanor is a synche without it, the next dungeons arent so easy without it, Yeah no wonder you were having problems in that dungeon, i am almost certain as everyone said you were just shy of getting shield oathm which wouldve magnified the enmity you gain by several times. Anyways cheer up, dont let this ruin paladin for you, paladin does get better, and just wait untill you unlock hallowed ground, i believe i told my friend once hallowed ground is the sole reason for levelling paladin, as a joke. I doubt theres anyone that thinks its a bad cooldown

Well I kinda bought the gear on the fly (though the belt was an accident since the giganto tooltip was making it hard to see what I was hovering over) and all the pieces I bought were the only thing available on the MB since what I could find that was relevant to my level were all crafted and either no one had any to sell or were selling them for 90-100k gil.

Ask around for someone to assist you then. There are plenty out there who will help craft you gear, especially if it's lower than level 50 as that usually doesn't require much effort for them to make HQ gear for you. I'd do it for ya if I was on your world. Hopefully a nice Famfrit'ian will show up here to help ya out though.

Go to your Grand Company and see what you can buy with your seals, with a priority list as such: [Weapon] > [Torso/Legs] > [Head/Hands/Feet] > [Belt] > [Accessories].
If you can't find some pieces, look at the market boards for HQ equipment. If HQ is too expensive, go buy some NPC gear (or look if they are available at a discount in the market boards, but usually they're more expensive than the ones coming from NPC merchants).

Just buy from a vendor, any level appropriate tanking gear will be much better.

What you want is the extra defense the tank gear provides. All of those pieces will substantially increase your defense stat, which will likely solve this problem:

I have updated my gear now that I'm 40. Haven't tried a dungeon yet since it was late and I was really sleepy. I'll try cutter's cry again today and see how things go now that I have shield oath.

Ok, so update on things. Just ran Cutter's Cry again now that I have Shield Oath and things went even better than when I was doing it as Drk. The run went smoothly and I didn't feel squishy and was even more sturdy than my Drk. I can see myself investing myself fully in Pld as it feels more relaxing having few buttons to press and I feel more sturdy and not as if I could die in a few hits. Pld is starting to click with me and become quite fun, though I have a couple of concerns. Is Pld ok for questing or would I be better off doing quests as another job? Also how is TP on Pld, will I need to worry about running out and need to slow things down or do I just go full ham on rotations?

You shouldn't have any issues with your TP unless you get yourself in long fights (end content type fights mostly). Feel free to go full ham, just don't use shield throw or your stun a billion times in a row. Now that your attack power is connected to your VIT gear, you'll have both hp and strength, so unlike in the past, you won't have to choose one or the other. PLD should be fine for any questing, it just may take longer to kill things, but they are quite sturdy. Usually in quests, just stick with sword oath for the extra dmg to help you bulldoze through quicker. I would highly suggest getting stoneskin from CNJ though. It's a great addition for questing and for content in general.
