So I'm new to tanking in general (I'm usually a caster DPS) but I was wondering which of the two starting tank classes (GLD/PLD or MRD/WAR) will be a better fit for transitioning in the DRK class.

Both! But probably in the order of PLD -> WAR.
PLD has cross class skills you want(and one that is absolutely essential!) and WAR has a closer overall style to DRK in that it's a more offensively oriented tank as opposed to the PLD's abilities which lean closer to support. Feel free to just take PLD to 34 if you aren't feeling it and then switch to WAR![]()
You need GLA to level 22 for Provoke regardless of what tank you play, and you'll want it to 34 if you're going to take tanking seriously. I also like PLD as a beginners tank because it forces you to learn how to recognize aggro and understand how it works if you want to do your job affectively. On the other hand the learning curve of aggro management on GLA has been known to scare people off of tanking, so that depends on your type of person.
Otherwise WAR is fun (particularly in the later levels), and you learn to focus DPS rather than party support.
You need GLA to 22 for Provoke, Awarness is not necessary even if you take tanking serious. Then you need MAR at Level 8 for Foresight and Bloodbath.
You can play PLD and WAR, decide what is the most fun for you to play. The difficulty from easy to hard is: PLD > WAR > DRK
So if you never tanked before take the PLD, its easy to play even before you get your Tankstance.
PLD is alot easier to play in terms of what to click.War is more akin to drk in that you are gonna click more buttons more often, so id definantly say it would be easier to play DRK if you play war first as youll already be used to pressing more things while tanking
off topic opinion tho DRK is a terrible class and you should stick with PLD or WAR instead.
Not true on so many levels. If you're mass pulling crits are most definitely a thing you'll be taking in the face.
Also, the Warrior ability Raw Intuition would like a word with you.
Raw Intuition: Parries all attacks taken from the front for 20s. All attacks taken from the flank or rear will result in critical damage.
Paired with Awareness which negates critical damage.
Example: Pull a large group as Warrior. More often than not some will try to get behind and at your flank. While Awareness doesn't perfectly overlap you can use Raw Intuition then throw up Awareness 4 seconds later - Forget worrying about their crits from that point forward.

This as well is not true, awareness definantly helps in specific situations, but it is not at all required in the slightest. Provoke is required for anything that has tank swaps, you will have a very bad time without provoke. Awareness is just fluff that will lessen some damage to a degree, but everything is otherwise mitigatable/healable without awareness.
also not sure why you bolded my quoted word lol. I was fully aware it was an opinion, some like drk, some dont, i dont.
Well seems like everyone said already. Most of tanks skills are from GLD (Provoke, convalescence,Awareness). From MRD (Foresight,Bloodbath,Mercy Stroke). PLD is an easiest tank to play and has similar play style to DRK and you don't have to worry much about defense if your gear are up to date with dungeon level. WAR is more active tank than PLD and requires a bit of tp management. It's all depends on which one you want to play an iron wall tank, or a massive HP and quick dps tank. As what most people said just get tank cross class abilities first then decide which tank you want to play.
Level GLD to 34 then toss your shield and sword. Level Marauder to 30 and then Warrior to 60.
CC skills in order
Provoke
Convalsomethingoranother
Awareness
Welcome!
I felt that Warrior gave the smoothest transition however, there are skills from both you will want. By the time you get your cross-action skills, you will be fine just picking up Drk and going with it. I did and did just fine. As a matter of fact, I notice that I play better than 90% of the Drks in DF and some of them have other tanks at 60 and Drk is my only 60 tank. Don't let elitist trolls discourage you.
Awareness is not required. It can help mostly for my Warrior but I've never been in a situation where I thought "wow, I'm glad I had that!"
