I tried to keep my pulls as small as possible, because I doubted these DPS even knew how to AoE. The very few times I accidentally pulled 4 or more mobs, yup, sure enough, BRD wasn't AoEing at all. BLM threw out a few Fire IIs but otherwise did a single-target rotation... that involved "spamming" Fire III.

I love the choices we're offered in these situations. Either speak up, tell the DPS they're doing badly, and get called an elitist snob even if I try to offer advice(which is what happened), leave, eating a penalty and getting called an elitist snob, or stick it out and have 50 minutes of my life wasted on people who refuse to learn and are perfectly happy to waste everyone's time.
Some people have whispered to me about a mystical fourth option, in which you speak up, the DPS actually listen, improve their DPS, and the run gets finished quickly, but I am starting to believe that this is just that, a legend that will never come true.
As long as you say speak up and ask if you can make a suggestion or be kind it seems to work. When those few people who say 'Why are you doing ___?!" That's when the anger rises for some. However sounds like a bad time all around.
Only one today, raid night got cancelled for us cus members were not there or personal issues so decided to do a PF for Nidhog EX, stated looking for people for last phase - clear. Couldn't even get to Fang and Claw consistently. Turned out after a few wipes that we had new people in there who had never even touched it it seemed as we had mass wipes before add phase.
I explain boss Mechanics for a AoE Heavy boss fight to a new player which I said "This is a DDR boss fight."
The new player ask "Why do you call it DDR?"
Then I said "Because it is Dodge Dodge Revolution."
The entire group laughed and we continued into the boss fight going through the usual AoE Dodge dance with AoE heavy bosses.
PS I tend to call AoE Heavy boss fight "DDR" due to it being a general dodge AoE Heavy Dance fight.

I was doing crystal tower yesterday and started with wod. I was getting into a group that already tried the first boss - and wiped.
After we got full again, I discussed with the other tanks, who will main and after that I told my group, what was our task here.
There was no wipe for us but just the cerberus was a miss at first try but then I took over the doggie 2ND try and we cleared without trouble.
The cloud was really easy since all knew what to do and communication was good.
I'm glad it turned out that way, especially for those who had trouble right before I arrived.
Syrcus tower I mt'ed everything so we had no trouble at all.
Sigh I tried to do Mentor Roulette on WHM; which in hindsight I probably shouldn't have bothered.
Got Dzemael Darkhold which isn't my favourite dungeon but I don't mind it. Got two mandy bud DPS but they were fine as far as I could tell, problem was the PLD (who had no mandy bud mind you and also had a DPS class at 55+) who started pulling in Sword Oath and didn't go to the crystal safe area.
They pulled the two hippogryphs and we killed them but the PLD had no hate on one of them at all and didn't even try to get it off of the DRG, but eh its just two mobs.
We got to the second pull though of 3 mobs and the PLD didn't go into the crystal so they were getting hit really hard since no Shield Oath and got hit by the Eye damage. I kept them alive just barely mostly because 2 out of 3 of the mobs were on me after two heals. So I tanked 2 of them while the others killed the other.
At this point I let them know if they don't use Shield Oath they will have problems keeping hate. No response they just kept running.
We get to the large room with the 2 switches that opens the boss room. This room is full of mobs. PLD runs in and we fight a lone hippogryph while not getting in the crystal. It doesn't take long before someone aggros the mobs in the center of the room and the wandering mobs up top. So since the tank isn't even using Shield Oath they flashed but took so much damage from the mobs and the Eye that I had to Cure II them. As soon as the cure went off I had about 6 mobs on me and we weren't in the crystal. I almost died but I sprinted to the crystal so the Eye couldn't hit me and since I had hate on everything at that point everyone followed me.
So as a WHM I tanked the whole pack spamming heal on myself while the tank diddles around just DPSing I guess. I never even saw any Flashes or any obvious attempts to do their job or help me since I was getting beat up. We killed everything and as the last mob died I quickly typed out "Please use Shield Oath, not using it is making this way harder than it has to be. If you are tanking a dungeon it is best to be in Shield Oath."
So I wait and see if they respond while we are standing in the switch to open the boss room. As soon as the boss room opens the PLD heads for the boss and I was like...okay I guess they aren't even going to respond to me. I followed to the boss room but still no response and they started running into the boss area. So since the PLD sees fit to treat me like a NPC that's just there to heal everything and ignore me I just left and took penalty. They probably pulled the boss and died but I wasn't going to stay when people are ignoring assistance. If they treat me like I don't matter then I feel totally fine treating them the same way back.
If they had even responded even one time (with something not rude anyway) I wouldn't have minded helping them, but I am not gonna sit there and struggle to do my job worse than savage raiding because someone won't even bother to listen or respond to me.
I wouldn't get salty over smaller pulls... And if you kept quiet... why would he pull more? Very seldom do you get what you want when you don't ask ._. Not all tanks are comfortable with large pulling. And honestly, as a PLD, large pulls are pretty much purely dependent on DPS to dole out ALL the damage. Because we are stuck there spamming flash (which does no dmg) and the occasional CoS. We don't have our DoT, nor our DPS combo. Pre 60, us PLD's are extremely underwhelming. It's still possible to do large pulls, but honestly, it'll likely slow down the run unless the DPS are on top of their game (pre-60 that is).
Did you explain those mechanics to the team? My very first though in that dungeon in PF is to make sure everyone knows to stand in crystal light. Practically don't even need to heal at all when you are xD
I understand the frustration of a tank being in DPS stance instead of tank and not listening, but it also seems like you didn't really give the necessary info to the party as well. Maybe you did and just didn't mention it, but I feel as a mentor, your priority should be teaching and guiding the party with information and reasoning. I mean, you're a mentor... mentor's teach and guide. Saying "standing in the purple light of crystals will give you a huge defensive buff" and "watch out for the eye flying around, he will deal massive damage if you aren't in the crystal light" seem like pretty quick ways to guide. If they don't listen after that, then yea... can't really do much more. But it kinda seemed like you just expected them to know.
Don't worry. I'll spam cure the crap out of you with my Paladin.

If he wouldn't listen to her suggestion about shield oath, the most basic part of pld tanking next to flash (which he also never used to help) what makes you think he would have followed something as complex as positioning?
