Currently. I believe they've already stated that they are planning to make it non-instantaneous down the road. Get your facts straight.

Is it any different from XI when people would go to where the airship docks to pick up, put their character on auto run so that it'd get on the ship then afk for 20 minutes to avoid having to watch their character ride the airship again?

The devs have said they have plans to make an airship experience with other related content. It was just a matter of resource management. Why take the time to crate a birds-eye view experience when they'd have to redo the whole thing once they redesign the maps?

They gave us a means to get between cities fast. So to clarify, it is riding an airship, but they entirety of the experience, like the rest of the game, still is in development.
