That was their excuse, yes. But, amusingly enough, subscriber numbers kept going down. And down... And even further down. So, I have to ask. What new players?

Taken at face value, I'd consider WoW a massive success being able to sustain massive subscriptions since 2004. Of course it would inevitably decline, but you have to admit some people are curious to see what the fuss is about and try a game. When they can't even level up, those curious followers will wither up along with the extra money the game needs to stay relevant. FFXIV is still in its infancy, and when you consider most MMOs typically have a lifespan of about a decade, of course the numbers will begin to dwindle as devs works to create the next title.

Even PSO2, a widely successful free to play Japanese MMO, is starting to lose sales on its free to play money system. Of course, that could be in part due to their current selection of lackluster scratches, but they also haven't added much new content to entice people to want to spend money on the game. And the whole Yamato controversy going on.

FFXIV still has time to grow. Its devs are looking for feedback on issues and they are doing their best to cater to customer concerns on a subscription model and a cash shop. It's unrealistic to expect them to be able to cater to every single whim on the dot hours after announcing a community engagement program such as the 711 promotion.

As a side note, 711 is a widely popular convenience store in Japan, hence the promotion. With the amount of foot traffic that place gets in a day, the exposure to this game would explode. That's the kind of reasoning I'm assuming is why they're partaking in this promotion. PSO2 has also done many 711 promotions like this where you get exclusive items from going into the actual store, and it makes sense in a business sense.

Leveling in WoW took 1-2 weeks (could be done in a few days if dedicated) to hit max level even if they were a new player, assuming they had prior MMORPG experience. Besides that, new players also got a free level 90 boost with the purchase of Warlords of Draenor. There was really no reason to add boosts to the cash shop, especially at $60, it was just another way for them to make more money.

And in a business sense, I bet people are canceling their subs if it becomes regional because it pisses people off. So yeah; you promote it but also lose.

That's assuming a new player, with no prior experience, would want to shell out extra money to buy an expansion to a game they don't know about. That's like requiring customers to buy Heavensward if they've never played an MMO or a FF game before. I mean, what even? Assuming I'm a new player, if I didn't like the first 30 days of my FFXIV account, I wouldn't want to shell out more just to play a game that isn't new person friendly. The people that do want to stick with it to the bitter end of their sub, however, are given a choice. In blood, except not really.

So what you're saying is, FFXIV should not have any outside promotion whatsoever to increase their sales figures? Despite the fact that we were told that those said region specific items weren't region specific and they're trying to bring them over. That's a big point you forgot. That's genius. You're genius. Good night everyone.

There's absolutely nothing to do, raids are not done anymore at that level, LFR is all but abandoned, dungeons are overgeared, no more challenge modes for dungeons, PvP in that bracket isn't as active, etc. Purchase a $60 boost to run MoP dailies? The other thing which I should have started with, purchasing WoW + Warlords was cheaper than WoW + level boost even at launch of the expansion.

To be honest, I really have no idea. You are clearly more qualified to talk about wow since, as I've said, I've never played it or followed information about it. There's so much to know going into that game that I'm honestly not surprised the sub numbers are going down. If new players don't get scared off by the levelling or the gearing up or whatever else a new person going in without any friends that play the game need to tell them to know about before diving in, then the old subscribers will burn out with the lack of interesting content or getting rustled by the current state of a declining game.

Can we get Bayhone or Zhexos here, they need to clarify this before this becomes a self-fulfilling prophecy
