    Aroy questions are your friend.
Ask questions no matter how stupid it may look. Thats the only real way to learn mmo. Tutorials always focus on how the devs want you to play now how it is actually played byt the players.

jan have you ever tried forming a party?

in reallity guys. in my first year of ffxi i could only play 2 hours a day. I manged to get parties. I managed to get at least rank 4.
How? I asked questions, set up times, shouted for help.

ffxiv does have stuff to do solo. side quests, killing things, farming mats fir crafters. the ffxix story shouldn't be solo able that is not the ff way. It never was. Should a game of stuff one can do solo yes. But nothing that is a major part of the game. If I can play ffxi for 2 hours a day and get stuff done. In the ps2 launch year might I add. Anyone can do solo stuff in ffxiv A slightly casual friendly game.

It never really occurred to me to ask questions in-game because I'm used to attitudes like Dubont's, where if it's not obvious to me I'm clearly too stupid to figure it out and not worth wasting anyone's time, and, well, NPCs can't respond to questions. The few times I've been helped by people I do ask whatever occurs to me at the time. I'm asking other questions here, but, if I shouldn't be, where should I?

It never once occurred to me that any of my questions were stupid by the way... I just now realized there's a support desk in the game, but my point is that you shouldn't have to go to that for something which should be explained upfront and right away at the beginning

What could you possibly have a question about? Also no...not everything needs to be explained upfront, at least not in the game. This is the reason why this site and these forums were made. THIS is where the info is. Don't like it? Leave. As far as my attitude...don't like it? Leave lol.

Actually, Kilta, I'm afraid you're incorrect.

ZAM translated a Japanese article back in March 2010.

Interesting to note is this paragraph:

-Going it Solo Being able to solo will factor big into the world of Eorzea, and the developers reveal that they are working hard to make a game that does not impede the solo player. Naturally, since enemies can appear in parties, there will be difficult, or even insurmountable challenges out there. However, Iwao in particular finds a certain romantic image in the lone adventurer, and hopes to accomodate that playing style to the fullest.
So, yes, from the very beginning they specifically said solo and meant solo.

...Why should I leave just because you've got an unwarranted self-importance complex of some sort? Do you seriously think people should really care about your extremely slanted opinions and if they don't agree with them, leave the forum? I'm starting to lean towards troll on this one, bro.

Also, I'm sorry, but... I, and I think the rest of world... are not psychic. We cannot divine where everything is and how everything functions without the barest hint of a scrap of information being given to us. It's not good design when someone can run around for 20 ranks without knowing where to buy armor.

EDIT: I mean really, when I started this game in Gridania, all they did was give me some level 1 mooks to kill and then say, "Okay, you're an adventurer. In an adventurer's guild. Have fun!"

I was two-three hours into the game and rank 7 gladiator with before I found the NPC to start my story quests. Alot of this game is like that, and the story quests themselves are counter-intuitive. You'll be told to go find an NPC and then you go where they're most likely to be - where you first and last met them - and then check your journal to find out you're actually looking for someone else.

You need to understand how Square games work. Did you have a tutorial for everything in FF1? what about Dragonquest? No. How these games work is, BAM you are thrust into a world. The game becomes what you make it. Do you need a tut telling you that Tier 2 spells are better than Tier 1? No so why should you need a tut telling you other very basic things about the game? Also, if you run around for 20 ranks without knowing where to buy armor, you really should get off of the game because you haven't even made an attempt at figured out how to play. There are NUMEROUS sites with info on this game. Lodestone, FFXIVPRO, Eorzapedia, ZAM, etc etc all have guides to complex info and basic info. I'm sorry, but I have no sympathy for someone who got that far without knowing anything at all. Some things I can let slide (like br's and NM tactics) but most things..like...battle...attribute points...map navigation...hotkey construction is all things that are very very easy to figure out.

Also...if you have a question...ask it. That person that went for 20 levels obviously was a troll. Why? I walked into Uldah without a clue of where the market wards were. I /sh Where are the markets?. BAM, I got a response. When I was playing in Beta, I didn't know that there were market wards so I /sh where is the AH? BAM, got a response. IT'S NOT HARD TO ASK!!!

Who said you need a tutorial? I said barest hint of a scrap of info. All you need is one NPC telling you where the market wards are. One. They don't even have that.

For those who start in Ul'dah, or perhaps any server more populated than Saronia - sure, asking for help might be a viable option. But where I am, Gridania might have maybe five or six people in it at a time. And my first day here, all of those people were either other total noobs who were wondering the same things or AFK for several hours.

I'm amazed that this person made it from Gridania to Ul'dah in the first place. The only reason I ever helped them was because we started in the same area at the same time and I ran into them later only to find out that they still had no idea what the hell was going on.

New players aren't going to know about /l or /sh or /p or macros or anything of that sort. Sure, if you've got experience with these sorts of games you can tinker with it and find out those kinds of things, but for all we know this may be someone's first video game ever. We have to think about those players too, their money helps SE build a better game for all of us.

Oh really? New players won't know? Well...I guess they won't know if they don't actually look at the game. If they just get the game and go "ok, let's play!" and don't look at the site AT ALL, then no...they aren't going to have the slightest clue of what's going on...but SMART people will look at the lodestone homepage and find this...

    Your argument is now invalid.

Aroy, please just ignore people like Dubont. I know there are plenty of them as MMO's have the unfortunate side effect of attracting socially inept adolescents. Mainly becuase they won't have to talk face to face with people and take responsibility for what they say, but there are also plenty on adults(and even mature socially capable young adults) who will be happy to share info if they can. Point being just don't respond to someone like that once you figure out what kind of person they are and don't hold back questions even if a troll pops up.

Oh btw I still want your Sig
