The thing is, we still didn't see the real villain on this game. And we will not see him till this game reach the end probably. But, I think will be Zodiark and Elidibus. Maybe the Emperor will have a better role on the last expasions, because he still didn't do anything mora than appear few times. Or maybe wil lbe a completelly different character that we still didn't se yet. We cannot say anything till we see this game complete, an that will be in few years.

Because heavensward was not about US losing it all, we just came to a new land that needed our light to be guided in our role of near omnipotent savior... So, is hard for anything to look like a challenge when we are basically ironclad in plot armor and we wield the sword of deus machina. That is what has to stop. The Warrior of Light has to be defeated.
SLIGHT SPOILERS THROUGHOUT FOR 2.x AND 3.0 CONTENT

I like your viewpoint and I completely agree. While it worked great at first with us being able to tackle anything during the early ARR era, I do think we, as the Warrior of Light, are a bit TOO powerful and perfect. I think we have to be knocked down a peg – and of course it can be the Scions collectively, but mostly us as the player character needs to have a huge, massive failure of some sort. Something to remind us that we aren’t a god, that we’re still mortal, that we can still make mistakes.

During the primal-killing spree of ARR content, it was great. We were on top of the world, it made us feel like a hero, and that IS important, don’t get me wrong. Also, I do think they’ve gotten better about giving us temporary let-downs (such as the Scions being hunted and having to turn to Ishgard for help at the end of ARR/beginning of Heavensward). However, the easier and quicker some wannabe-bad plot points are resolved, the more disconnected I seem to feel from the characters. I realize this is fantasy and everyone wants to be super powerful and act like they rule the world and all, but to me, going too far in that direction starts making the characters too hard to relate to.

I need to see some human connection to the characters, see that they can and do make mistakes that have lasting consequences. Even in an on-rails story like most Final Fantasy games give us, including this one, the writers need to introduce some actions and consequences.

    SPOILERS FOR 3.2 CONTENT BELOW

That young lord who shot the arrow that injured the protesting woman at Falcon’s Nest. What if the person who did that was, instead, the Warrior of Light, in a moment of panic? What if the consequences were more far-reaching than they actually were? (Literally 10 minutes later things are “back to normal”.) What if people started getting disillusioned against the Warrior of Light for something like this? Why is our character so perfect? Why don’t they ever flinch? Why don’t they panic like the NPCs around them?

Our characters, in my opinion, can be TOO perfect. Sometimes the greatest villain could be the good guys because of their imperfections, their emotions. We don’t see that – our characters are basically perfect little angels. No villain can ultimately hope to stand up against them, as much as the story would like us to believe otherwise.

To be fair. I like to be like a god. I do not like villains who win, never. I do not like those "Warrior of Darkness" be more powerful. Similar power? Yes, More? Has no sense if they are the opposite to us. Our character was ridiculous defeated when they appear for the first time. WHy? My character not even draw his weapon and already was defeated? Why? Why that is cool? I do no like those badass villians who defeat the heroe and hummillate him because "it is cool". We are gods in the game, we need to be gods, to destroy another god, Zodiark. I'm am totally conveinced our character is a Primal-like being summoned by Hydaleyn, for some reason. But, it is my opinion of course.

    MAY CONTAIN SPOILERS!

I'm in the "not necessarily needed" party.

I think things are going well as they need to in the story right now. If we have some big nasty we're to kill at the end of every expansion the bad guys wouldn't feel as sinister and threatening. I think that's my issue with most MMO's. Is that every expansion there seems to be an endless line of bad guys to whom we just end up swatting away by the end of said expansion.

We currently have the Ascians in the story and I think they're doing well as the current villains. Would be interesting if they were to actually ressurect/summon their god; upon which they find out said god really is a devil and culls the Ascians, thus becoming the next focused big bad that we end up chasing around for x amount of expansions. Though that sounds more actual end of game than continuation.

In the end I think they're doing fine with what we have.

"Nael van Darnus" Yeah, he was an awesome villain. Of course, he died at the end of 1.0. Gaius van Baelsar just hasn't been the same.
