Are you surprised when someone who blatently calls someone else a thief and throws blind accusations, is suddenly given the verbal backhand for their actions?Great. Both SE and Powerman 5000 made a statement on the subject. GMs should close this thread.
Just as the original FB post, it'll only invite even more SE fanboys and girls telling Powerman 5000 that "he should be grateful for the flattery" and a fool that was better to back off since he was "irrelevant" now. >____> Honestly, the outright insults for this guy...
If you were a musician in a similar position, you would want to protect what you feel is your work. Doesn't matter current fame. Not gonna say who was right or wrong on the subject, but the outcry of fans who were using insulting him was a little not to my taste.

I am not surprised in the slightest. But being fair, Powerman 5000 does not think it's a blind accusation either. Being given a verbal backhand is also very different than calling someone's band irrelevant and (from the perspective of Powerman 500 now) telling them they should be grateful to have their work stolen.
I don't mind when people decide to stick up for their idols. But the personal digs were childish and only reflected poorly upon our community. Not that we need any help in that respect either. Forum community has always been a bit iffy.![]()
Issues:
1) No one said they should be grateful to have their work stolen.. People said at best, that they should be grateful it pays homage to the past, at best. People have made it very clear they do not feel like it is a ripoff. The fact that you and the band used that terminology - "Theft" - is the big part of the issue. No one said stealing is ok. That's part of the victim narrative you are trying to create.
2) Even if Powerman 5000 does think it's theft; there are more mature ways to go about it. They basically went about it like a child, shouting and crying that the big bad bully came and took their toy. In reality, he just pulled a toy from the toybox and appearantly the child thought all of them belonged to him.
You say that the personal digs are immature, but I do not see either side (Especially with how you defend them) to be completely innocent in this.

And it was established that tributes and homages need to have a nod to the original to truly be homages. As that wasn't done, in the eyes of Powerman 5000, it felt like his work was being stolen.
Yes, but as I wrote it every time from the perspective of how Powerman 5000 felt, it doesn't matter what other people thought. Read that again now, I was talking from the perspective of what Powerman 5000 felt. People are still entitled to how they feel, no matter if they are wrong or right. I am not framing any victim narrative here. Only pointing out that our side of it handled it just as poorly.
Of that we are agree. But I imagine he didn't linger over his FB post before hitting the submit button. There ARE more mature ways to go about it, but his approach really was never under debate. Everyone thought it was a bit harsh. I did not defend his original statement and the manner in which it was made. Only recognized his feelings on the subject.2) Even if Powerman 5000 does think it's theft; there are more mature ways to go about it. We must be reading this in two different voices then. How I'm defending them is merely letting my distaste for how our side handled it be known. Neither side IS completely innocent here, but as I'm not on a Powerman 5000 forum and seeing that conversation, I can't exactly shake my finger at them now, can I?

Errr.. I'm sorry, when I first heard it, I immediately was confused and thought "Did SE hire Powerman 5000 to record an homage to 'When Worlds Collide' for this game?1) No one said they should be grateful to have their work stolen.. So, I'm guessing that the 'people who made it very clear they do not feel like it is a ripoff' haven't listened to a lot of Powerman 5000 and especially weren't very aware of that song. I'm betting many of them had never even heard of the song before this came up, so they went and listened to a band they'd never heard of and just decided 'nah, it's not a ripoff.'
Powerman 5000 was 100% justified in feeling like his music and style may have been stolen. There are parts of it that sound almost exactly the same, even if the lyrics are different. Sure, he probably could have responded better, but a better response could have included a lawsuit, so there's that.
