Did .Hack just get another series?

This would be Log Horizon the ONLY "I'm trapped in a MMO!" series I like! Instead of doing the whole, if you die in game you die in real life, they have it as an experience loss penalty. Only you pay with memories of your real life. So you die and forget what your mother looks like or what the name of your first pet is.

And they cover the crafting system and npc's in a way I would have approached it as well. The npc's gain sentience (which some players DO NOT accept easily and in some cases at ALL) and for crafting, if you go through the menus, the food is nourishing but tasteless.

Uh, what? Red Mages have always used swords, and their iconic weapon is typically a rapier... and if I recall in XI they specialized in several buffs/debuffs.

Well, not a particularly GOOD swordsman. Status depends on the game, but it's use of elemental magic means it absolutely exploits weaknesses.

That said you are absolutely right, the Fencer class fromElder tale is a pretty bad Red Mage.
