I've been working in the gaming industry for 5 years and have been a GM for more than 2 years now. I joined a company for a game I played a lot back then and was lucky enough to work on that game until recently. It's an incredible experience but it also breaks a lot of the hopes and ideas you might have.

    You will see that:

    1. The influence you have is more limited than you hope
    2. The game will not be the same for you when you work on it 8+ hours a day - it WILL influence your gaming experience, believe me
    3. Working in gaming is not all fun, be ready for A LOT of overtime, often unpaid
    4. Wage in the industry usually sucks

However, I wish you the best of luck, though. A colleague of mine applied for their EU office a while ago and had several years as GM on his back. He was rejected for a lack of experience.

I've worked in the AAA gaming industry for over 11 years now myself (senior software engineer now, started out in support and community). I love working in the industry but the wage can royally suck unless you establish yourself. I worked 9 years at a company that made a certain popular MMORPG (I quit last year) and I heavily played their games daily. It didn't affect my enjoyment at all. But it is true you have limited influence over the game. Even if you think the idea is terrible, the powers that be are usually delusional and won't listen to reason.
