They should get on things now, because much of their audience may not be paying attention by then. They may read this and simply write this game off.I'd think SE's number one priority at the moment is that the game does well in Japan.
They probably do not see the English-speaking media's reports as a cause for immediate concern at this moment in time.
The people who visit MMORPG.com and the like will most likely forget about all what's happened once the site starts reporting positive things about the game once SE's English PR department start getting on top of things.
The game and the development team have taken so many hits from the gaming community, I doubt one more is going to damage things to the point of no return.
Maybe you just don't understand how people digest information. Bad press like this is reinforcing negative attitudes towards the game, and is a poor introduction for anyone who has not yet formed an opinion. It doesn't have to be this way, they just need to generate some positive or balancing press. All these sites are reporting on is Chocobo's and Airships and a delayed patch... so release to them something more than that.
Something like the beastman video (they ran a whole article pretty much just featuring a Chocobo video...), the escort quests, the linking/chaining system, future plans, etc.. Anything, and if they don't report on the information you give them then offer them an exclusive.
There is no such thing as a "hands off approach" to information management, it is called professional laziness. It is sociological ignorance.
Perhaps you should write to the sites concerned, giving them all the information about 1.19 they should have had then?Maybe you just don't understand how people digest information. You could make up for SE's laziness and 'sociological ignorance'.
Maybe I did already. Maybe others should too.

Mostly though Square Enix should do their job and ensure more information about the game gets out other than "chocobos and airships".

That IS Square Enix's job. It's not our job to make the game popular, it's theirs.
We already paid money for our CEs and Standard Eds (most of us did anyway). I know I won't be writing to any sites unless SE personally sends me cash.
As much as I want this game to succeed, we shouldn't feel coerced in to being volunteer PR workers.
Not only that, these sites will realise SE isn't doing their job properly at all when it's the customers giving the sites all the information. This will more than likely cause them to write more negative articles on SE and their game.
Maybe if this was the 1990's, and these were professional journalists.Mostly?

That is not the case, this is the age of twitter, facebook, and morons on the internet. "News sources" are not the same as they once were. Either:None of those is a good sign that information on this game is being managed properly, and it definitely should not be the extent of this game's engagement of Western gaming media.
- These writers came upon this information completely themselves and somehow missed everything else about the game.
- they were told by a player via a news tip submission or twitter post or something equally sad
-or-- Square Enix released the information to them.
At this point I think any news coverage on XIV is good news. Instead of people totally forgetting about it (let's face it a huge number of people probably have) they're reminded that the game is still in development and maybe seeing a bit of general news about the game may provoke their interests. MMORPG.com recently posted a revisiting to the game from the perspective of a person who hasn't played for a year. Is it comprehensive? No. Does it need to be for the audience that website targets? No.
I don't think it was unjustly pessimistic or short sighted. A lot of problems that people faced at launch are still problems now. That doesn't paint the game in the best light, but how do you argue against an opinion? A lot of people seem to use the tactic of, "mine is better than yours" which gets them labeled as an irrational fan. If someone says the game outright sucks or it hasn't come very far in a year, they're just as entitled to that opinion as you are of yours. Overall, this community (one that I held in high regard) has become so overly defensive that anything even resembling negativity is seen as an attack. It's not.
And do people really need to justify their response on a forum by prefacing every post with IMO?
