On an other note: seriously, the anger and random accusations that some people are making in this thread. Woooow. Lighten up, you're playing a game. Even on girls the dance is still fine (I personally like it quite a bit)! The dance is as it is irl! If you don't like it, don't get it/don't use it, but to make such a huge drama out of it? Come ooooon. It's a virtual dance in a game, is that really worth being so pissy about?
Again: lighten up, you're playing a game to have fun. Jeez.

Conversely they don't let the male characters do the more reserved and stately version, it's just that no one's complaining about that because we've all been socialised to think of masculine-coded traits like aggression as superior to feminine-coded traits like restraint.
That's the thing though; in real life even if a dance has sexist elements (I don't know anything about Maori culture, my apologies!) there's nothing actually stopping a girl from performing the 'masculine' version anyway if she chooses to. Any girl reading this thread can jump up and start doing it right now unless they have some kind of physical problem. Likewise, even if some people are sexist and hate the idea of guys wearing 'feminine' clothes nothing is stopping a guy from walking into a department store, buying a dress and being gorgeous. Or shopping online if they are shy.
So whether or not the underlying culture it's based upon is sexist - I have no idea - there being two variants of a dance doesn't have to be a limitation. Ballroom dancing was cited as another example and that's a good one because of course it's rooted in traditional gender roles for its culture. But in real life, you can easily swap the roles between the traditional male/female positions if you're in a group of girls or boys or just want to switch things up.
However, the game world has limitations on what the player can and cannot do with their character, and that's why people might make suggestions of how to enrich the experience for themselves based on their individual preferences. I think we can all agree there would be no actual down side to having access to both dances on all characters other than the time spent fixing the motion capture to work with the models and they can probably justify that if they release it as a content bonus (like the recent /sit additions) or reward for some future questline.
Heck, it would be a pretty awesome and cute storyline for a future Vanu Vanu or general beast quest. Some young female wants to learn the male version of the dance (or vice versa), and the Warrior of Light decides to help their new friend out. Sure, why not.

Huh, I guess this means I missed a day of quests or accidentally messed up the overlapping in rank.
Which makes more sense, in an avian-based species... though, in owls (among other birds), females are notably larger than males (non sequitur: Lalafells also have a rather low degree of sexual dimorphism)!
Hydalen is not Earth. But yay, anthropomorphism, and the projection of human gender politics onto every non-human race, I guess. /s
Ahah I laughed more than I should've. She looks like a stiff action figure.
God darnit, here I was excited because it was somewhat similar to the haka (Is a New Zealander)... but only for guys it seems D:
I know at school we were encouraged to do the masculine Haka regardless of gender, but for official performances the women do indeed do a softer version. *sighs sadly*
The female version of the vanu vanu dance is too different from the female version of the Haka, and that erks me a bit (No spirithands? and none of the other classic actions) whereas the male version of the vanu vanu dance is more similar to the haka.
Why have one similar and one not? It just doesn't seem right :/
The more I watch the female vanu vanu dance, the more different it is from the female haka. It's rather disappointing

This is sexist, I really dont see how you can dispute that. This someone who disagrees with tumblr feminists most of the time. If you dont see it, why dont you go look for the definition of sexism?
From dictionary.com:
"1. attitudes or behavior based on traditional stereotypes of gender roles.
2. discrimination or devaluation based on a person's sex or gender, as in restricted job opportunities, especially such discrimination directed against women."
Both of these apply in this circumstance. Number 2 applies in terms of restrictions to some gear in this game, and now to this dance being different. And just because they based it off some real life dance makes it not sexist? Lol? What kind of logic is that? When you copy something that is sexist, guess what? What you copied is also sexist! Big shock!
And its disappointing, because I wanted my character to have an aggressive dance. Really getting tired of seeing this gender restricting BS in gear and now a dance.
I like you. I was thinking the same thing. People get so upset over the smallest things. Males have cool things and females have cool things. It's called being different it would be boring if everyone had access to everything. Then there would be no diversity. Congrats males for looking cool. It's nice for guys to get nice things too.C...-cute?! M-me?!
